View Full Version : Lauzon the Pig showing signs of impaction

:unsure-1: When Guinea pigs get old, occasionally they can develope something called impaction. Its not usually serious at least not at Lauzons age at present.

Basically Guinea pigs have an anus that empties into a big internal sac that stores softer stools. The reason is because they only pooh out hard stools, the softer ones they eat a second time for nutritional value.

As the pigs age, they can loose muscle tone, and it becomes harder for them to be able to eat these softer stools, and they cant really pooh them out.

So the stools build up.

I always check Lauzon when I clean him out to check for disease, and I was disturbed to find soft stool sorta sitting in the opening to his sac. Its not really impaction yet...but its a sign that in a year or so, he might start to suffer from it. When this happens, it will fall to me, to slip him over and empty his sac when it gets full.

Bless him, he was hyper embarrised about it, I know this because rather then squealing when I turned him over (pigs dont like being upside down) he just went real quiet whilst I cleaned him up some.

have you never heard of redisgestion??

at least its not regurgitation

Besides...the yucky thing isnt that they eat their own shyte in the first place...its that if they cant, I have to effectively empty the internal cess pit of their little redigestion sack :scared0011:

I've heard of caprophagia, but I didn't know that guinea pigs routinely practiced it. Don't bring Lauzon down to Central or South America. In that part of the world, they keep a few guinea pigs on the floor of their mud huts. When it is dinner time, they grab one and butcher it up for dinner.

Yes, I know,...there is a famous Roman Catholic painting of the Last Supper which swaps the Bread for...guinea pig.

 The only time I've ever laughed as hard as on viewing that painting, was when a very nervous priest doing their first Eucharistic Feast got the words Wrong, "after supper he took the cup, and broke it..." Nope, dear Sir, he Broke the bread...not the cup

On a side note, I am glad you were careful this time about the thread title and specifying that it was about one of your pets. I could just see a thread getting started on Sherdog about Joe Lauzon being ill with a fecal impaction and resorting to caprophagia.

well, one needs clarity on such a sensative topic. I should really inform Joe that his namesake is having...anal issues :ninja:

this is some nasty stuff but it happens to dogs and cats too. i had a friend who's cat had impacted glands. one way of knowing if your animal has impacted glands is when its anus smells REALLY REALLY INCREDIBLY BAD. he took it to the vet, and the vet used some kind of medieval looking metal tool to scoop out this big blob of impacted crap. he said the doc waved it slowly in front of his face and he almost threw up because of the sight and the smell. he said it was the grossest and wost smelling thing ever. dave you really should take it to the vet once it starts to get real bad. you shouldn't be doing it yourself, let a professional do it

If it suffers from full on impaction, I will have to get a vet to sort it because they will probably need to be put on medication.

We are along way off that. I'm just always looking out for signs and ill health and this is the first ive seen...chances are we are a good year if not more away from Lauzon developing full on impaction.

He looked real pretty and content sitting in your lap in your "predictions" blog.

What do guinea pigs eat? Maybe he's not getting enough fiber.

well..I only feed him the pellets from the shop plus the hay.

I have been told that I can feed them fruit and veg also...I might try it now because it might stave of the impaction for a while if he has a change of diet I suppose. I know other people at work who have pigs so they will be able to tell me what to feed him.

Lauzon doesnt seem distressed...I think its just a sign that he might get impaction later in life. He hasnt actually got it full on yet, I just caught him when he was displaying the signs that it might happen in the future I guess.

I've kept an eye on him and have had no further signs yet

Tyburn, a novelist could not come up with a character as eccentric and complex as you are. I don't know if that is a compliment or not, but you can take it as one.

no not really.

idiosyncratic and complex are not very alike at all

it's easy for a writer to create an idiosyncratic character, but hard for a writer to create a complex character.
