One of these days I'm going to need to man up & start hunting. I love venison but have never even fired a real gun. If anyone wants to offer some advice, I'm willing to listen. Otherwise, I'll just sit back & envy y'all.

I would too if it wasn't in South Louisiana. I've taken way too many of them not to be able to age local deer on the hoof. Our average 3.5 year old deer in south LA & south MS are 100" 8 pts with bodies that look exactly like that.

OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!!!! keep em comming boys!!! Nate the deer down here are like the size of big dogs up in your parts. I killed a 200lb 8 point last year and people tried to get me to put it in the paper. Shawn, we have got to hook up and go hunting man. I just got into a good piece of land, only about 120acres but nat hunted in 12 years.

VCUramfan, find a range and go to it!. We are blessed to live in a country where we can own fire arms and hunt(i dont know for how long) so take advantage of it. Be safe and have fun. God gave us thhis earth to enjoy!! I'm gonna do my part.

THis was a Managment buck in every sence of the word . I took him last year about a week before shotgun season with my bow .

Guessing him to be around 4 and a half or 5 and a half .

His rack wasnt huge by anymeans , think he might have scored 135-140 . BUT he field dressed out over 250 pounds. We had him strung up on the scales ina barn with 10 foot rafters and it still wasnt high enough to get his whole head off the floor. SO with his head still touching the floor the scale was already over 250 pounds. When he walked in he looked like a cow compared to the 3.5 year old infront of him . I figured if he was that big bodied and hadnt put on any more horn than that , then he didnt need to be reproducing so he was thinned out . Filled my freezer for the next year with that deer. The processor said in his 30+ years of cutting up deer , it was the biggest to ever hang on his scales.

Here is a pic of it hanging in our garage beside my dad before we took it in to the processor.

You guys would laugh at the deer down here (south florida). a big one is 160lbs and a monster is about 180 lbs.!!! Most are around 140 lbs. though. And I mean not field dressed. We don't usually need to field dress. One person on each end can load them. tehn we hang em and gut em.

dang you guys are making me miss hunting. moms don't get to hunt as often as dads. even if moms were hunting before they knew the dads!! my family has always hunted deer. we don't kill much of anything else except maybe hogs that are tearing up the place. when i was planning to start a family i had to choose messing up hunting season or deer season. i chose fishing season to skip. the first deer my kids ever saw was mine (they were only about 5 months old so they don't remember though)

please post pictures for us!!!

the bad part of this is that this deer is VERY young, I would love to let him go and see what he is next year, but where I am hunting at, nobdy else will let him walk. I hope my wife gets to shoot him. I dont think I will be able to pass on him, with my bow.

what do you do with the boars? we let them walk unless one had big enough cutters to mount. my brother will sometimes catch them , cut them and send them on their way.

Rev
09-16-2009, 05:58 PM
well, around here we have so many hogs that they have become a BAD problem so, we shoot anything that grunts or squeals. My stepdad took this one because i didnt feel like dealing with it, he will soak him in salt ice water for a few days and then in milk over night. Next stop, the grill. The main reason I shot this one was he was actually rooting while he was by my stand and I had a guy with me who I have been working on getting involved in church. He is a product of the outdoors ministry I just started, so what better way to get him hooked than a kill? I also wanted to try out the G5 stiker broadhead.
