Not only do I want this as the opening hymn at my Funeral...I also want this version...I love the fanfare introduction...but I REALLY like the Trumpet harmony in the later verses, and the fact that the Choir sing the penultimate verse as the harmony...without the melody line...lovely touch!

The Bishop of Notre-Dame uses his Crozier to Knock on the Cathedrals Great West Doors during a set of Call and Responses in order that the Procession may enter on Palm Sunday :) For those of you who perhaps are unaware, Notre-Dame is the Cathedral for Paris...Le Sacre Coeur whilst far more prominant in location is a Minor Basilica. Cathedrals are more important...infact Basilica do NOT have Bishops.

This is true even in the case of The Pope. Many assume he sits on his Cathedra in Saint Peters Basilica...which is false. The Seat of the Bishop of Rome is actually in Saint John Lateran Cathedral. This Cathedral is also called a Major Basilica...but first and foremost its a Cathedral. The other Major Basilicas, of which their are only a total of four, one obviously being Saint Peters, are still, technically, lesser then Cathedrals. Bet you didnt know that did you.

Soooo ive found an instrumental of a song that reminds me of a work collegue of mine...We both often sort out the flowers, and there is one particular type of flower bunch that pops up occasionally called Germini...and my friend, he's not very politically correct, infact he's really dour most of the time, and whenever he sees this bunch of flowers he bursts into song...a song from a musical...its "springtime for Hitler and Germany" so this bunch of flowers is forever known now as "springtime" :laugh: the Lyrics poke fun at something not wholly funny as the next line of the song is "Winter for Poland and France" anyway I wouldnt post the actual song coz, its a bit naughty...but I found an instrumental on a theatre organ instead :laugh:

The wounds on your hands never seem to heal
I thought all I needed was to believe

Here am i, a lifetime away from you
The blood of christ, or the beat of my heart
My love wears forbidden colours
My life believes

Senseless years thunder by
Millions are willing to give their lives for you
Does nothing live on?

Learning to cope with feelings aroused in me
My hands in the soil, buried inside of myself
My love wears forbidden colours
My life believes in you once again

I'll go walking in circles
While doubting the very ground beneath me
Trying to show unquestioning faith in everything
Here am i, a lifetime away from you
The blood of christ, or a change of heart

My love wears forbidden colours
My life believes
My love wears forbidden colours
My life believes in you once again

When sung with proper pronunciation and diction, Latin is one of the best languages to hear. There are not many that raise my eyebrow, and all of late have been female cantors...I finally found a Male Cantor...and he's singing a Bible Reading...which is most odd to begin with. He's singing, in Latin, a scriptural account of the Epiphany...and its really beautiful to hear...you start to understand when you listen to it, how those people in Europe who could not read or write their own national language, would be in awe of such a performance...and its largely based on this sort of inspiration, that the Roman Catholic Church was the force BEHIND the entire Monarchic Dynasties in Europe for the best part of half a Millenia.

Regrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention!
I did what I had to do, and saw it through without exemption

Yes there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more then I could chew
but through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spat it out

and now as tears subside, I find it all so amusing
to think, I did all that, and may I say, not in a shy way

For what is a man, what has he got, if not himself then he has naught, to say the things he truely feels and not the words of one who kneels

Posted as my prayer for a friend of mine :)

Loving Shepherd of thy sheep,
keep thy lamb, in safety keep;
nothing can thy power withstand,
none can pluck thee from thy hand.

I would praise thee every day,
gladly all thy will obey,
like thy blessed ones above
happy in thy precious love.

Loving Shepherd, ever near,
teach thy lamb thy voice to hear,
suffer not my steps to stray
from the straight and narrow way.

Where thou leadest I would go,
walking in thy steps below,
till before our Father's throne
I shall know as I am known.

Bells from places where I've lived...they all sound...remarkably different :laugh:

The Cathedral Church of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Lincoln (Where I was born and lived 18 years)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhvicoyN6gk

The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Bradford (Where I went to University to study at Undergraduate Level for 3 years)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm-vg6GWlwE

The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of Saint Saviour and Saint Mary Ovirie, Southwark (the diocise in which I lived as a Member of The Lay Community for 2 years)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhNPozRSfik

The Cathedral Church of Saint Paul, London (Where I worked for Two Years)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_IB6EBhX8g

The Abbey and Collegiate Church of Saint Peter at Westminster (I studied for 1 year at a post graduate level and this Royal Pecculiar is probably the closest Major Church.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfvg3WPpkM0

The Cathedral of Saint Wilfrid, Ripon (Where I have lived for eight years and currently reside. The first purpose built Cathedral since the reformation, built on the crypt of an old church, given the original status of Minister, and changed to Cathedral to govern Leeds)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFnnq-DO5mw

I have lived in both the archprovince of York and Canterbury

The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ, Canterbury

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3-4ooxodzM

The Cathedral Minster and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter, York

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kyh5yed8F0g (a Nice example, is to listen from 2.30 - 3.30 when the chimes give way to the main tolling bell, and at exactly 3.00 if you listen, you hear the first strike of the toll within the chimes.

Often in British and European Cathedrals, the Largest, Heaviest, Lowest Bell is actually given a NAME :laugh: Often its the name of the dedication, for example, Great Peter, in York...sometimes it isnt...and Saint Pauls, the Great Bell is called "Tom" and one really famous one in Europe is called "pummerin" :laugh:

Big Ben is a misnomer...The name of the TOWER is big ben...the name of the Bell in the Tower is "Stephen" I think :laugh:

I was really dissapointed when the Mormon Tabernackle Choir decided to tackle my favourite anthem, because they were...well...frankly dreadful :laugh:

If you dont believe me, try comparing them to the tracks below

I Was Glad

(Mormon Tabernackle)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE135Sqli8U
(Tempo is too slow...Brass is out of time during fanfares, The melody is drowned out by bass harmonies, Messy diction on echo phrases, Organ not loud enough)

(Westminster Abbey)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtyFC2Nl_6Y
(On the occasion of the Marriage of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Excellent giving over of the organ fanfare to the brass section, Messy diction from the Choir though, Organ not loud enough)

(Saint Pauls Cathedral)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YstlGy1Ld0
In short, apart from the fact the editing has chopped off half the opening fanfare...this rendition is nothing short of...perfect :)

Whenever I hear this music it reminds me of my Mother, because once when we were having a laugh she did a vocalization to this piece, as its often performed as an aria anyway...this particular rendition is special though because when I was really small we used to have a piano, nothing as big as the one in the video....but my Mother was like a grade 8 on it when she was young. She would play the piano before and after our evening meal when I was very small. The Piano went when we moved from Lincoln to Harrogate at the tern of the last century though...in many ways I miss it.

Its the Moment during the Easter Vigil at Saint Peters Basilica when the Ressurection itself is celebrated via tintinnabulum. See...between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, the Church does not celebrate communion because Historically speaking, Christ is dead, and hasnt yet risen. Easter Sunday begins with an all night candle lit vigil (we used to do this in Saint Pauls Cathedral, so it isnt specifically Catholic) The Vigil Ends at Sunrise on the Sunday Morning

Up until that point the Communion Services begin...but stop, abruptled between the Peace and The Gloria.

Obviously, the Easter Vigil is timed so that the Gloria is supposed to begin at Sunrise, The Ressurection happens, and Mass can continue. But their use of a Tintinnabulum made me jump when I first watched this...I wondered if someone had just set off a fire alarm. :laugh:

Despite the Latin, Tintinnabulum were all over Eastern Asia long before the Romans. Usually a fixed bell at the entrance to a Shrine, or a City. The idea is that its situated as a look out, and makes a noise for the arrival of someone important, or in the case of impending danger. Most Tintinnabulum are built into Churches, and far from being a sign to the people inside the building, are actually more often used as a method of calling people to the building.

There is a magnificent scene in the disastor movie 2012...when a tidal wave roars through china, and the Monk at the monestry high up in the mountains pulls back a huge bit of wood to strike a single free standing bell, and gets washed away :laugh:

With aprox fifty members of The Royal Family present in Westminster Abbey, The Earl Spencer, who was the Brother of Diana, Princess of Wales, uses his Eulogy at her State Funneral (only granted due to the Public response by her Death, and long suspected politically motivated Assassination in Paris, it is considered very likely that Diana was in the early stages of pregnancy at the time she died. To avoid Illegitamate half siblings to the future heirs, it is thought that the cover of an accident might have been used to safe guard the Royal Line. The person most often accused of being behind this, is The Queens Consort.) to launch a Veild attack on Royalty.

To find that an astonishing thing occures when he has finished. Something which at a time when the Royal Family was at its lowest point since Twix World Wars, shook the Monarchy to its core.

I just cant quite believe how many people turned up to hear the new peal of bells at Notre-Dame to celebrate Eight Hundred and Fifty Years...particularly, when I dont think much of the peal...European Bells just arent as...crisp and nice as British Bells...largely, believe it or not, because most of the original european bells were smelted down by the Nazi war machine during the second world war...I kid ye not...great source of munitions apparently :laugh:

What is lovely, is that before they hung the bells in the towers, they had a mass of benediction...where they blessed the new bells, during which they had all the bells lined up all the way down the nave of the cathedral...they are MASSIVE...so large, that there wasnt very much room left for the congregation. Each one was sat on a lil platform. It looked really strange. The biggest was closest to the High Altar, and the smallest, basically at the Great West Door...but even the small ones, were like as tall as a man lol

And during the blessing itself...the Bishop would go past each bell, and strike it, to make it ring, so to speak! bong, Bong, Bong, down the Nave he went ahahaha

Whilst the British are especially known for Pomp...I stumbled across something interesting from America...Aparently the Roman Catholic Church classes the US Military as an "ArchDiocese" Which is, very strange. In an Episcopal style church each area is governed by a parish, a single church, each group of churches which are in an area are called a diocese, and lots of diocese grouped together are ArchDiocese.

Now, The Military obviously isnt the same, but I quite imagine, that each branch of the Military is probably defined as a Diocese, and each RC Chaplian probably counts as a parish. Therefore, a tad like the Anglican ideal of The Third Province...this Archdiocese is not a geographical district. Anywhoo, the seat of their archbishop can be found at The Basilca, of The National Shrine of The Immaculate Conception, in Washington DC in the Diocese of Military Services

If they have anything like this anywhere else, I have NEVER heard of it :blink:

They have rather a procession though :laugh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNC-JhBTFFM

You might also know, the network that filmed this, and puts out a lot of Roman programs, was invented by a modern day contemplative. Once her network became popular in the United States, it caught the attention of the See of Rome itself, and the Curia began an investigation with an interest of taking control, and removing power from the monastry.

Its inventor did a very strange thing, but one I figure a lot of you would applaud. She instigated a Lay Governing body (A non ordained team of Romans) She basically made them promise to keep the network going and then severed all connections between the network and the Monastry.

Effectively, throwing the Network into the laity completely, and beyond the abilities of the Vatican and Roman Curia to control.

How Ironic, that a contemplative should have the foresight to know that a tool such as this, essentially had to be kept away from the very subject of its programming...She would rather give up the project completely and never be involved with it again, rather then let the Pope take charge of it.

It is the way with all Churches I think, that ultimately, politics and powerplay are in abundance even more then the secular world, and of course without the prospect of money...its all about power and control. I know this from my own experiences of working with one. Even multinational capitalistic companies have nothing on the foul play and politics of the Established Denominations...especially not increadibly important Cathedrals.

I know a Bishop who could out-do any Company CEO :laugh:

Outside of Government/Civil Service and possibly the Armed Forces, there is no place you should be more cautious about then getting involved with a Church...especially if that involves working for one. :laugh:

So this is the infamous Introit, I Was Glad, based on Psalm 122, performed in The Cathedral Church of Westminster Abbey...in the write up the order of Procession is given, and You'll note two things...firstly, the absence of both His Grace, The Lord Bishop of London, and Primate of The Northern Province, Ebor is also missing...this is unusual considering that this a Service of Thanksgiving for the 60th Anniversary of The Queens coronation...but perhaps they tagged onto the end of an earlier procession. Secondly, notice that in the Liturgical Order, the later you come, the more important you are, notice that the Archbishop of Canterbury is FIRST in the procession, and the entire dean, chapter, and everyone else, including effectively lay canons, are put behind him. This is because the position of a Bishop, no matter how High his Status, is relative to the place he is attending...Now the Abbey does not have a Bishop, instead, effectively, because it is a Royal Pecculiar, HM The Queen is in place of the Bishop as Defender of The Faith...the Chapter and Dean are then effectively taking the place of any diocesian Bishop...In St Pauls, for Example, The Bishop of London Trumps the Archbishop of Canterbury inside the Cathedral...because, it is His Cathedral...anywhere else in the whole world, the roles are switched.

As the procession takes off, note the quandary of the poor Deans Virger...First, he has to directly speak to the Royals, to get Prince Charles to move ahead of the Queen...and then the Dean continue to walk back through the procession to speak to The Queen and the Virger, litterally pulls him, physically to the front before setting off.

The final funny moment is when as they are walking away, The Duke notices some poor cleric stood all on his todd, most likely a member of visiting clergy, or possibly an unwanted chaplain...and the Duke tries to invite the member of Clergy into the procession at his Level. Unbelievable. :mellow:

Looking into the Saquerium I can see that His Grace, The Lord Bishop of London is already present, it looks like he arrived with the Eccumenicals :laugh:

Just to be clear, the Saquerium is the east end of the Chancel between the Sanctury (which contains the High Altar) in the East, and the Quire in the West

Westminster abbey is unusual in that its Quire begins BEFORE its Transepts...so the Saquerium begins directly after the Crossing, and bizzarly, it also has a Quire Screen that extends half way down the Nave...thats unusual in a Cathedral, that almost always either has a completely enclosed Quire containing everything up to the Rearadross and then a large Retroquire before the Apse...OR they have an open plan Quire, and next to no Retroquire at all.

Almost all Retroquires are converted into Chapels...in Saint Pauls the Retroquire is very small, and its been converted into The American Memorial Chapel infact...these chapels end in the Apse, which is the Eastern curved wall of the Cathedral

You begin with steps at the West End, followed by an optional covered porch, and the Great West Doors, inside you find the Vestuble, and in some Cathedrals, you also find a Narthex, one of the biggest is inside Liverpool Cathedral, its SO large its like a proto-nave its VAST. Beyond that you have the Nave, and going upwards in the Nave you usually have a second tier which is known as a Triforium, where there are big Galleries, probably a library aswell, above that you have the Clerestory which is a tiny high up walkway around the nave, below the Nave you may have a Crypt, or a Charnel House, or an Undercroft...and Undercroft will extend beyond the confines of the church above and probably have external exits outside, Charnel Houses are like Mausoleums, except inside a Church so they will contain caskets, and a Crypt is probably mainly filled with monuments rather then bodies.
at the west end of the Nave you will find the Crossing, this will extend north and south forming the Transepts, and entries to the circular Chapterhouse if the Cathedral is old enough, and maybe the Cloisters if the Cathedral used to be a monastic foundation. North and south Asiles probably run along the Nave aswell, and there could be side chapels.

Any Dome or central tower will be placed right on top of the crossing, and any constructed Altar for the Nave is likely to be placed on a movable Dais at this point.

Beyond the Crossing, further East you find the Quire. Sometimes this has a screen with a gate which you have to pass through, sometimes there is no screen. Either way, there is usually an Ambulatory, which consists of two aisles, one north, one South which go around the outside of the Quire and meet at the Apse. Inside the Quire you have the Stalls, at the East End of the Stalls on the South side, you will find the Cathedra Throne (in a Roman Church the Throne is often right at the East End, touching the Apse. Beyond the throne will be the area between the stalls and the Communion Rail...that is the Saquerium. After the Communion rail you will find The Sanctuary, and together the Quire, Saquerium and Sanctuary compose The Chancel of the Cathedral.

East of that will be the High Altar, it will either be sitting under a huge canopy type structure, known as a Baldekino, OR it will stand infront of a decorative wall covering, which is known as a Rearadross.

Behind the Rearadross will be the RetroQuire...the space behind the High Altar, this will probably be converted into a Chapel which will touch the Apse and form part of the ambulatory

I hasten to add that there will be an many rooms which come off the nave and the ambulatory, called Vestory, that are preparation rooms for priests, and one very important room which comes off the Ambulatory will be known as The Sacristy, which is the preparation area for Communion stuffs, Cyborium, Chalice, Plate, Wafers, Wine, monsterones possibly some Reserve Sacrement

The place will likely also have a Treasury, or at the very least a Strong Room, where it stores valuables like processional crosses, candels, and it will have some place where the Vestments are stored, all the Chasubles and Copes and the likes. It may have Tabernakles which are like a Safe built into the wall of chapels where the Host can be stored, it may also have a pyx...these are strange looking objects that hang from the ceiling suspended above chapel altars, the Host is kept inside and can be gained by lowering the pyx, this is most often where any reserve sacrement is kept

One of the most beautiful pieces of choral work...quite well known as well, this is a setting of Psalm 51....The history of the psalm is that King David wrote it after he committed adultery with Bathsheba, and got her Husband moved to the front lines of combat so he would be killed. He eventually realized he had acted inappropriately...and this is, frankly, his apology to God

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
and justified when you judge.
5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
so that sinners will turn back to you.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
you who are God my Savior,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 Open my lips, Lord,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice, O God, is[b] a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise.
18 May it please you to prosper Zion,
to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,
in burnt offerings offered whole;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.
