Todays Gospel reading-the vine and the branches- gives us one of the most exciting and challenging images in the New Testament. Remember form last week "I AM" is the name og GOD, so when Jesus says "I am..." he is both telling us that he really is GOD, whilst also telling us what GOD is really like. He tells us here that GODs invitation to us is to be part of him, hust like branches of a vine are part of the vine. And if we are then we will bear fruit. The big challenge of the passages is, of coure, just how do we abide in him and so bear much fruit? The answer: through our weekly worship together, through our daily prayer as pilgrims on the journey of faith, and by growing in both our fellowship and our learning. This is how GOD forms us and enables us to be his people so that we can reflect his priorities and do his work in the world.

GOD is love, and he enfoldeth, all the world in one embrace, with unfailing grasp he holdeth, every child of every race. And when human hearts are breaking under sorrows iron rod, then they find that selfsame achine, deep within the heart of GOD...
