United Way Event - August 21st
August 18th, 2008

I usually don’t do this, but I’m going to break my rule this time. There’s been so much talk about my last blog entry that it’s amazing. Some of it is legitimate thinking, some of it is just from idiots. I never said the GSP fight was boring, the reason I walked out was because I wanted to beat the crowd. I didn’t think Fitch was going to get back in the match and the fight wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be. If you want, you can go look at my last blog entry and see that this is basically what I said. So people criticized me for leaving the fight early and said that was disrespectful to GSP, I disagree, I just wanted to get out of there. Some people just need to realize that this is what I do for a living. Now let’s take what you do for a living, go to a conference every month for a few years and see if you want to leave early during one of them. I even had one guy on Yahoo! Sports report that I said that I thought GSP was on steroids. If you go back to my blog and look at what I actually said, I said that I thought that he looked smaller than he has looked before. Never once did I say that GSP was on steroids for this fight. Just goes to show that you can’t trust some of the journalism for the sport out there. Pat Flanigan came down a couple of weeks ago and we did some shooting at the house and had a good time: Wednesday I go for my second MRI, so Wednesday afternoon sometime I’ll report on the findings. This Thursday, we’re having an event out at the gym for the United Way. It will be from 5-8 PM and you can get all the information from this flyer: ![]() -matt |

You do not have to explain anything, anybody who’s trying to put words in your mouth on your website, is no true fan!
Make sure you’re ready for the fight with Serra, be ready and be hungry!
GSP had something to say about it…

Matt, don’t listen to the crap. Even if you wanted to leave early because you don’t like GSP or Fitch that is your right. I’m sick of people judging everyone especially the best fighters we have ever seen(you). Thanks for caring so much about us and what you do, I appreciate it. God Bless.

Hey man, don’t take any guff from those journalist swine. You’re better than them.

Matt:
Keep the faith! I know you will. You’ve put so much time and effort into this sport that you deserve better. You are a true icon to the sport. You are a pioneer to the sport and one of the first champions! I read the blog completely different than the critics did.
God bless!

YOur real fans didn’t doubt your intentions. Everything you said was pretty clear. Unfortunately journalists don’t make a living unless there’s news and some less reliable journalists have to create conflict to fill their day. Shmucks! God bless you!

you were right the first time, shouldn’t have even warranted a response. It didn’t justify one- the ones who are behind you, know and don’t feed into it. The ones who-never will.

Matt don’t think twice about any of those negative comments. You are a Champion and I know you are going to DESTROY Serra. All of Us True fans will always respect and support you Bro. God Bless

Hey Matt, Your real fans all appreciate that you take the time to give us an update on what’s going on with you and your thoughts on things. When I started reading on how people were interpreting your blog, I had to go back and read it again myself, because I didn’t understand how they came away with some of the things they were writing. I give you alot of credit for putting your thoughts on paper (or blog) for everyone to see. The media’s job is to take benign comments and twist them to make them news worthy. Thank you for your blog, keep doing what your doing.

The irresponsible media has no right to misquote you or anyone nor misconstrue your words. That’s defamation of character and they know it, though the Legend of Matt Hughes is too glorious for defamation to happen. Good thing not all are irresponsible. My commends to the responsible media.

Never really understood why this was a big deal. Georges won the first three rounds decisively and he put a beating on Fitch that would have left a KO by Jon very unlikely. That said, the fight was overafter three rounds. Saying someone looks smaller for a fight is not a steroid accusation. People train different ways for different fighters so maybe GSP thought he needed to be quicker and slimmer for Fitch and bulkier for other opponents. what’s the BFD?

I saw you for the first time during your 50th fight… I’ve only recently been watching a few UFC fights. Coming from a medical standpoint, I can’t believe you’ve survived all the concussions and injuries you must have gotten over the years. I hope your MRI tomorrow goes well, I honestly thought you’d broken your leg above the knee and dislocated your kneecap - either injury could force retirement. But after my roomate filled me in on your background, I was truly impressed by your determination, strength, and skill - let alone your quick agility and reflexes. As for the media - anyone with a brain knows they twist everything just to get a headline… you and your family are in my prayers about your knee. a guardian angel, Ruh

We know several things from this:
Firstly…people have cottoned onto the fact you have a blog…if they say they dont care…thats not true…or else they wouldnt keep checking what you say
Secondly…this is a good example of how an innocent sentance can get taken and expounded on…”I left to beat the crowd during GSPs Fight” becomes “I hate GSP so I left his fight” anything to put a spin of drama
Thirdly…there are still people out there and forces out there that would like to deter you…to make you reconsider posting blogs in the first place, to make you look bad. Whether these people know or not…thats a form of spiritual attack…and I tell you a Truth Matt…If you werent still a threat, you wouldnt still be a target…sooo take heart instead
Finally…Although I thinks its great you gave feedback and noticed all the stuff…you dont have to explain yourself to anyone, neither will those who twist your words listen to what you say in your defence…there aim wasnt to portray truth in the first place, nor to have a civil discussion, nor to understand what you meant.
So when this happens again…and it WILL happen again…notice it for the value it shows…people, whatever they say, are still interested in you…and the demons still find your presence worth an attack…indicative, far from being victimized…that you in actual fact are on the right track.
…oh…and I understand what you mean about work…tell NOONE…but today I left half an hour early…and noone will have noticed hahahaha

Am curious as to how your Christian faith jives with your gym supporting and hosting an event for the United Way, an organization which does lots of great things, but to my knowledge still takes a pro choice stance in its position on abortion and the rights (or lack thereof) of the unborn child.

Don’t sweat it Matt, this is what idiots who can’t get a job with ESPN or SI resort to to try and get a gig with one of the big boys.

Larry, you answered your own question. The Bible also says a great deal about charity lest ye forget. So a person has to agree with every aspect of a charity in order to give? They do a lot of excellent work and it would be silly to hurt the kids who benefit form their programs and, oh by the way have NO idea about the organizations moral or ideological affiliations. Does the United Way ask if you are pro-choice before they aloow you to benefit from their services? i don’t know but I seriously doubt it. Let it go man, it’s OK

Ya dont listen to those guys living in their moms basement. Your the man.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:20 am
Don’t let those morons get to you Matt. Just like any news media, they always have to twist and turn things to make them negative; they feed off of negativity. Your TRUE fans know the truth.

Hey Matt,
Just wanted to say I hope you get a great report today on your MRI for your knee. I also enjoyed the clip of you and Pat Flannigan and Mark. As to all the hoopla over your previous blog–let your heart rest easy. God Bless!
August 20th, 2008 at 10:28 am
It’s silly that everyone expects you to simply praise GSP every chance you get. When you said you left the fight early to get out, I understood; no disrespect at all and yet it’s being misinterpreted as jealousy by these drama queen journalists. Honestly, if anyone actually bothers to read your blog, they’ll see that you weren’t taking any cheap shots at GSP.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
i couldnt believe they said that on there either, i read what you posted first, and after that i read the yahoo article. i couldnt believe they put those words in your mouth. The sport of MMA is slow right now and these people are bored and just trying to stir the pot, As you said they are idiots.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I hope your MRI turns out good and you do not have to get any surgery! It would be nice if you could be cleared to train for the Serra/Hughes fight………that’s IF Serra takes on the challenge…….Take Care Matt

I was at UFC 87 and saw you seated near Rampage. Did you manage to talk to him at all? What do you think of his actions in the last month?
