UFC 85 and some other stuff…

   April 29th, 2008

I took the fight with Thiago because I liked the match-up. Obviously, I have to worry about his stand up skills, but on the ground I think I’ll be okay. What I don’t like is the fact that it’s such short notice and that I’ll be across the pond. I’d rather fight in Vegas or in the Midwest, but it will be good to meet some of my fans from England.

This weekend, we will be going to some fights in Effingham, IL. I’ll have two guys fighting there from the gym. For information on the fights, go to www.mercenary-promotions.com. We will be selling HIT Squad and Team Hughes gear. Robbie, Marc Fiore, Matt Pena and myself will all be there.

I’ve started three-a-days (which means I’m doing three practices a day), I’ve got to get in good shape. I’ve been working with Matt Pena on a stand up strategy. It feels good to get back in the gym and work on things. We at the gym just have such a good time being around each other.

Finally, I ran across this the other day and thought it was pretty interesting:

FIREARMS REFRESHER COURSE

“Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not.” ~ Thomas Jefferson (This is why Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton want gun control so badly! )

1. An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.
2. A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.
3. Colt: The original point and click interface.
4. Gun control is not about guns; it’s about control.
5. If guns are outlawed, can we use swords?
6. If guns cause crime, then pencils cause misspelled words.
7. Free men do not ask permission to bear arms.
8. If you don’t know your rights, you don’t have any.
9. Those who trade liberty for security have neither.
10. The United States Constitution (c)1791. All Rights Reserved
11. What part of “shall not be infringed” do you not understand?
12. The Second Amendment is in place in case the politicians ignore the others.
13. 64,999,987 firearms owners killed no one yesterday.
14. Guns only have two enemies; rust and politicians.
15. Know guns, know peace, know safety. No guns, no peace, no safety.
16. You don’t shoot to kill; you shoot to stay alive.
17. 911: Government sponsored Dial-a-Prayer.
18. Assault is a behavior, not a device.
19. Criminals love gun control; it makes their jobs safer.
20. If guns cause crime, then matches cause arson.
21. Only a government that is afraid of its citizens tries to control them.
22. You have only the rights you are willing to fight for.
23. Enforce the gun control laws we ALREADY have; don’t make more.
24. When you remove the people’s right to bear arms, you create slaves.
25. The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control.

I’m working on being in London for the fights, it shall be my first return to the city since leaving Saint Paul’s on August 31st 2005. Whether I stay for the fights, I dunno, thats something thats still in the planning phase, but it interesting to note this wont be your first UFC fight in London, although the O2 will be more recognizable and what your used to, then the RAH was. Also far more central. Last time I was in London the Greenwich Peninsular was a wasteland with the Closed “Dome” which is what they have Re-Named the 02, I shall be interested to see how they’ve developed that. As for your gun composite, well any person under a Monarchy is a “subject” technically speaking, even with a Firearm, if you live in a Monarchic Society then you are “subject to the crown” As for the police thing…well its unusual for our Police to be armed. I can tell you also that if you didnt have guns, YES the Knife crime rate would rise, thats the problem with England in terms of violent attacks.

If you cant control the Citizens, then how can you be certain they will be Law abiding? It only takes ONE, thats always the problem, just the same with driving a car or anything that could kill, Millions do it safely..but if ONE person either WANTED to break the law, or made a mistake..hundreds potentially could be killed. This is the main cultural difference between British and American. We do not have guns, we expect and demand our Government protect us and look after us. We Expect our Government to Lead, they are not JUST representatives for us.

Point 21 works both ways. In America the citizens are frightened their Government will mutate into something that controls them In England, the Government is held to account by the People, we dont fear our Government, we may not always like it, but we arent really frightened. If anything, they know the population of this Island is FAR to big. We may be a State in size, but check our Population hahahahahaha

Good luck in England Matt! I’m sorry that the bulk of spectators out there are still interested in seeing a fighter take a beating. I much rather watch the skill of control and finish by a submission. Life is too short and important to receive so many blows to the head. One blow from a knee or elbow and your teeth are gone forever but a strategic choke can finalize the contest while removing all doubt over who won. There is nothing better that a strike to set up a perfectly executed takedown and/or submission but continous strikes to beat another human being down in to a bloody pulp still evades my interest. But I guess dollars have to be made… It’s a shame that Jerry Springer and WWE mentality still runs rampid among the fan base.
Gun Control? Laws only control the people that follow them, not criminals. The day they can guarantee me that the criminal breaking in to my house won’t have a gun illegally is the day they can have mine. Police on the telephone is about as good as the officer that shows up after a crime is committed to do some paperwork. No fault of their own, they just can’t be everywhere they need to be all the time, it’s just not realistic. But please don’t take away my ability to defend myself and my family. I’m glad that they have no fear in England and living in America I don’t fear the government but I do appreciate my freedom and all the brave souls that have paid the ultimate price for it! It’s just my humble opinion but it appears to me that the only control that works is to control ourselves. Log in your own eye and all that.

Good luck in England!! You will do awesome! I am so looking forward to seeing you fight again!

UFC 85 has been saved. I find myself not being able to sit still; I cannot wait for that main event. In Thiago’s last fight, Karo took him down and it seemed effortless. Karo even mounted Alves and did nothing. I feel real bad for Thiago when he gets in that position on June 7th. I have faith in Matt Hughes!

By the way, I love the political message. I cannot stand or even look at those 3 morons, especially Clinton. I don’t even want to think about what would happen if those people had their way with this amazing Country.

CINDY213 Says:

You are rigth with that political message and that is wath gets me mad that some people just dont get it ..and that we shud stop the wor because they just want oil like comon u are killing milliansor kid women men for oil this country has to do beter then that …they shud just pay ..i dont get why the union wants to get in control of the hole world is dum well in my opinion .

Well..I’m EXCITED!!..too bad i can’t travel to England! I was looking on the UFC web page and first heard about this so I came to check it out on your page. My other source says that if you win on the 7th, you may get St. Pierre again? Is this true?

AnnaLee Says:

I’m sorry..disregard that last comment..in my excitement I read too quickly and misunderstood..either way..i’m ready for this one! I’m even more ready for the next fight and to see Matt Serra’s expression when your arm is raised!! Good Luck in England!

Steve_O Says:

Matt, wanted to let you know I’m a huge fan, and share this post I left on an MMA fan site:

This is one of the reasons why Hughes is my second favorite fighter (GSP being my first). Hughes has nothing left to prove in this organization, is a 9 time champion, with two non-title wins as champion. He has never ducked from a fight, shows tremendous heart, and survives deep submission attempts. And, win or lose, he is always a class act after the fight.

For this fight, I definitely give the edge to Hughes, for strength, experience and heart.

Steve

Matt, wanted to wish you luck. I will be in London to watch you fight, It wasnt till last Saturday that I decided to go, when I found that you are fighting again. The political message I totally agree with. I only wish some people(politicans) just understood the only laws/rights they are trying to take away from us.

Last but not least, as a member of greatest military in the world, that just got back from Iraq, I want to ask those that dont support the soliders, airman, sailors, marines, and coast guard, if we were not in Iraq/Afghanistan, put in harms way so that you can complain bout us being in the war, would you do it. I didnt think so!!!

And for those that support the military, I personally want to THANK YOU!! If you see someone in uniform, it may not be much, but a “thank you” goes a long way.

Shea

Ke-Wa Says:

Matt,
Glad to hear that you are getting back into the ring soon. About gun control, here is a very revealing video about gun control in the UK.
Just in case the video does not embed, I will post the url too.

By the way, I always tell people to carry a gun because cops are too heavy and darn near impossible to conceal. ;-)

bamagrits84 Says:

First the firearms part is funny. Second I am so stoked to see you fight. I’m sure you gonna kick butt.

WalterBailey Says:

Matt put this guy in a double chicken wing!!!

lilfish Says:

Matt good luck in your fight man. I wanted to thank you for saying what you have said about gun control. Also thanks for supporting the troops. My brother is in Special Forces and is currently overseas. we both respect you alot and my brother wanted me to say thank you. For all of those sheep out there who don’t support the military and for anyone who is interested please visit this website and maybe you will understand why they fight.

35 days until the fight! So excited!! :D

Joel B Says:

Having just been stationed in the UK, boy was I excited back in Feb when I picked up my UFC 85 tickets. Then I was crushed when I found out that Chucky wasn’t going to make it.
Thinking my first UFC event was going to be a bust I couldn’t believe it when my boy Matt Hughes stepped up.

Mr. Hughes, your a true professional in the worlds greatest sport. Congrates on the tremendous career you’ve had. Good Luck at the 02 Arena!

Also as a firearms instructor I don’t think I could agree with you more concerning the 2nd Admendment. Then again I do tend to “cling to my guns and religion” at times.

cfc Says:

Matt - I’ve been a long time fan and have followed you since the pre-Zuffa UFC.

This fight could be dangerous, especially the way you lost to GSP (totally shocking to me). You know more than I, however it seems like you need to bring more high level guys into your camp and make adjustments to your game so that you can evolve with the sport. Bring guys in that you can learn from rather than teach. Your fans need to you beat Thiago, and more importantly, that loser Matt Serra. We’re all counting on you and couldn’t bare to see you get thumped again.

AnnaLee Says:

I’m hoping the reason you haven’t updated the blog in a while is because you’re too busy training and working those mad fight skills! :D the hard work will pay off on June 7th!! 31 days till the fight!! So Excited..
