NCAA Nationals

   March 20th, 2008

First up I want to apologize, I’ve been extremely sick this week. Tonight will actually be my first time down to the gym since last Tuesday. But I feel a lot better now and I’m teaching class tonight. This weekend is NCAA Nationals so I know a lot of the guys from the gym and some of the coaches are going to go watch. I hope I can sneak over there a little bit and get to watch some of the wrestling. I remember the two years I competed at the NCAAs and it’s just something I’ll never forget.

I found this and thought it was kind of funny, but there is a little bit of truth in there too.

Doctors:
The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.
Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.
Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health Human Services.

Now think about this:

Guns:
The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. Yes, that’s 80 million.
The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188.
Statistics courtesy of FBI.

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.
Remember, “Guns don’t kill people, doctors do.”
FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.
Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention.

For the record, I don’t have anything against doctors, but it does make an interesting point.

To all a good weekend and I’ve got a big blog lined up for Sunday. -matt

It’s actually much more dangerous for your kids to play at a house that has a pool in the backyard as opposed to a house with gun owners. The word ‘gun’ evokes fear, which is understandable. I’ve been shot several times with a BB gun, [it] hurts like a mother.

Great read Mr. Hughes. I’m a proud gun owner and things like that really make you think about the whole, ” Guns kill people ” slogan. Guys like myself appreciate reading things like that. Anyway, on another note, My girlfriend and I are in the process of trying to sell our house so we can move to Granite City. It’s a dream to me to train with the team you’ve got there and I can’t explain for how excited I really am. Thanks for everything.

Growing up in Philadelphia, I have a different view of guns than those of you from the mid-west or south. The key word to point out in this article is “the number of ACCIDENTAL gun deaths per year”. The problem isn’t careless hunters, a problem occurs when these guns end up in the wrong hands. I haven’t checked with the FBI but I’m pretty sure that more people have been MURDERED by guns than by doctors.

Glad to hear your feeling better. Have a good weekend!

Dang it Matt, now ya made me pirate your post, and e mail it to all my friends at work. :)
I have a personal story about Dr.’s and mishaps. : I had brain surgery 2 yrs. ago. I had a brain aneurysm. While the Dr.’s operated on one, they nicked another vessel in my brain, and GAVE ME a second brain aneurysm!!!. Walk in with one, leave with two. :) So that post was funny …and relavent! :)

Matt,
It is good to see you have a sense of humor and not serious all the time… then again you may still have a fever and won’t remember what you said.

Remember, “Guns don’t kill people, doctors do.”

Pulvaris Says:

Well I’m glad you’re feeling better. Its a good idea to stay away from any communal activity whilst ill, if the illness is at all infectious and you go to the gym…you’ll give it to everyone LOL

Now we hear in England have 0 Accidental Deaths per year due to Guns because it is against the Law to have gun. All our Gun-related deaths are deliberate. Doctors on the other hand are not banned…they are FREE…YES FREE HEALTH CARE…Not that I ever see a Doctor, im not sick often, I only hand my slip in to get a pill refill everyso often hahahahahaha

[You can purchase an autographed photo HERE and have Matt autograph it to whoever you want. They're $12, but all of that money goes to charity so we don't actually make a penny off of them. -NateR]

Glad to see your view on guns when its a positive aspect of your life. But how would you feel if it wasn’t.

mikthehick Says:

Yeah, how true is that guns to doctors ratio thing?

It’s really scary! Look forward to your next blog! :)

The warning about doctors was so funny I posted it on my site. I hope all of you guys had a nice Easter.

juandissimo Says:

So true. I used to work with a lawyer for the States Attorney General’s office (he and I were the only outspoken gun owners in the building I think). His comment at the time (remember this was in 1991) use to be “Can anyone tell me the weapon used in the biggest mass murder in US History?” It was of course a 5 gallon Jerry can of gasoline (google “The Happyland Social Club NYC”). “So I guess what we really need to do is outlaw 5 gallon gasoline cans. Right?”

MFSrules Says:

Wow, nice work manipulating statistics. Accidental sure, but the number of simple gun-related deaths out-does anything that happens on an operating table. It would be like a doctor saying “Well, the number of deaths from knee surgery is much lower than deaths from hunting accidents.” C’mon, fellas, you’re all smarter than this. Hug your gun. Love your gun. But, don’t fall for this. Let’s take all the guns off the streets and take all the doctors off the streets and see which one you want back first. Remember, you can make numbers tell whatever story you want them to. Matt did a good job telling a story with his. A tall tale for sure.

oushigari Says:

There are tens of thousands of deaths in the U.S. every year caused by gunshot and many die from the pills that his doctor said would cure his headache. The bad thing is you can´t un-invent both stupid inventions…

WalterBailey Says:

I have anti-gun nieghbors. Boy do they hate when I get smashed and shoot my pistols up in the air!

GO MATT!!

Love this post. It made my day! It’ll be floating around myspace in 2 mintues!
