Knight Rifles Invitational & ‘Lone Survivor’

Training is going great, this last week at home will probably be one of my toughest weeks. I just need to get it in my mind that I’ve trained properly for this fight. I’m a believer that cardio is confidence. Training not only helps your body, but lets your mind know that you can go all five rounds. I want to go back a couple of weeks. Two weekends ago, Knight Rifles invited me to Iowa for their invitational deer hunt. I love hunting so I gladly accepted. The last day I shot a 10-point buck which scored 155. I’m a firm believer in Knight Rifles, I shot my first deer with their Long Range Hunter and this deer I shot with their new rifle, called the KP1. But the biggest reason that I went to the Knight invitational hunt was because I love the people who work for Knight Rifles. I’d like to thank Mike Mattly for the invitation and for assemblng such an amazing crew up there, it was a pleasure. Knight Rifles is no longer a paying sponsor of mine; but I believe they have the best product out there and good people to go with it. Here are some photos of the deer I shot, you can see more in the forums.
Last week, I was in Vegas for The Ultimate Fighter and I met a former Navy Seal, named Marcus Luttrel. He wrote a book about one of his last missions over in the desert, titled Lone Survivor. I’ve not had a chance to read it yet; but some close friends of mine have and they can’t put it down. I now consider Marcus a friend with a great story and I just want to share it with you. ![]() What are the biggest differences between your experiences coaching on season 2 and coaching on season 6? Well, the main difference was having my assistant coaches there for season 6. For season 2, I was just there by myself and had assistant coaches given to me. Rich Franklin was there; but we were competing against each other. So it was good to have guys that I have been working with for years as assistant coaches. If asked, would you come back to coach a third season of The Ultimate Fighter? Yes, I would; but I’d have to have my family with me. Finally, we’re going to try to get one or two more training videos up between now and my fight; so stay tuned for those. -Matt |

Way to go Matt. If you ever put in for any Arizona hunts you let me know and you have a free guided hunt by my brother and I. We owned Goodman boy’s hunting guide service until this year. We closed the doors to spend more time with the family. This 2008 season will be my oldest daughters first deer hunt she is 10. Our whitetail are called coues deer and alot smaller than that beast.I have a record book coues on my wall and it scored 115 inches. We shoot at them at 400 yards sometimes. It is a blast.

Matt,
About your upcoming fight, just believe in yourself and the fact that you trained the best you possibly could for the fight. You have many people behind you, and most of all, you have GOD in your corner.
GOD BLESS!!!!
P.S
About being a coach for the 3rd time, I think it would be awesome because I feel that anyone who gets the chance to be coached by you is highly benefited. I also agree about the family thing, I could NEVER leave my boys for a long period of time.

i left one reply but it was taken off by the web master. i guess if your not a hunter you don’t get to reply, but i have really never seen any sport in shooting at something that can’t shoot back. down here in alabama, we shoot at each other that gives both people the same chance, anyway nice buck.
my biggest reason for not hunting is because my father didn’t hunt so he never took us. he went hunting one time with some of his hunting friends and they had to crawl out of the woods becauce of an idiot shooting at sound and not sight, his last hunting trip.

To many people do not know what hunting is. With out hunters to keep the population down hundreds of deer and elk would die of starvation evry week. The true hurt on wildlife is the encroachment of the population into the wild lands they live. When you hunt you may never even see the game you are hunting for. It is not like you go out and find a deer or elk in a coral and shoot it. I know guys here in Arizona that have hunted all there lives and only taken a couple deer. I understand that if you have never been hunting before that you think you just walk out and shoot a deer and go home for breakfast.
Just like Matt trains all year for his fights that will come along we train all year as well. I will hike many many miles a day in some of Gods roughest country to hunt Arizona Coues whitetail deer. You must be in top shape for this and i have trained for 20 some years in this Sport. If it was not Football season Or wrestling season In my town of St.David AZ We were on the mountain Glassing for deer and Mountainlions. Hunting is a way of life to alot of us UFC fans. The best meat you will ever eat is fresh meat raised on your Own farm or ranch and that you will take in the field of hunting.

First, Can’t wait for the match Dec 29 th. I am a big fan , along with my husband and daughter . I just wanted to ask if there is a way to link those photos (deer) so not everyone can see them unless it is clicked on? I was visiting your website as always and my daughter was with me and she saw those photos of the deer (buck) and started to cry. I know matt is a good family man (from what I read ) and was wondering if it’s such a good idea to post it right on the site ? Just it may be a little to gross for children.

Great buck Matt! I agree with your thoughts on Knight Rifles. I bought a Knight Disc Magnum about 5 years ago and its a great gun. Totally changed my deer hunting. The old Remington 870 (another great gun!) rarely gets out of the gun case anymore. Good work and God bless. Can’t wait for Dec 29th, we’re behind you 100%!

Merry Christmas Matt and Family! I am praying for you to fight your best fight on the 29th. Enjoy this day we celebrate as the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ! May the Lord richly bless you as a man of God, husband, father, and provider.

I’m not a hunter, but great job nevertheless. Been a fan since I found the first Ultimate Fighter. My husband (then boyfriend) and I have been watching UFC ever since. Matt is always one I root for. I won the bet about Hughes’ team beating Serra’s! My husband should learn to stop picking against me since I found UFC first! Just got done reading Matt’s Made In America. So what if it was a Christmas present to my husband? He still got the autogrpah! Great book! Encourage all to read. My husband also read Lone Survivor and highly recommends it. Just thought I’d check out the site after I got done with Matt’s book.
Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas!

Thats a nice buck. Like many others I would like to extend the offer to come hunting here in Oklahoma. Though our deer usually don’t get quite that big, but they are crafty. I don’t use a deer stand or a feeder, I track them the old fashioned way. I just picked up Lone Survivor and hope to read it soon. I don’t know Marcus Luttrel but I do know some of the Rangers who were involved in his extraction.
I can’t wait until the fight on the 29th. Its the last one I get for free thanks to my UFC fight club subscription, and I know its going to be a great one. Best of luck and God bless.

I personally don’t have anything against hunting, so don’t take this question the wrong way, as it’s just a question. Do you think that killing one of Gods’ creatures is something that Jesus would have done?
