Thoughts on the TUF Finale
December 9th, 2007
|
Well I had some really good fights on the card. The War Machine/J-Rock fight was excellent, and I believe the Huerta fight was the fight of the night. Very happy for Mac, you can tell that he really prepared for this fight and he did well. Disappointed for Tommy as he didn’t get to show what he’s made of, but nothing to hang your head over. He got second in the tournament and he’s sure to have a future in the UFC. While training Saturday morning, I met Governor Rick Perry from Texas. Great guy, big fan of the sport and spent a lot of time with him on Saturday. He was sitting near me during the Finale and as soon as the fights were over, we all went up for a private viewing of the Hatton/Mayweather fight. I’ll have some pictures with the Governor later on. All in all, I just want to say that it was a great experience being on the TUF show this year. -Matt |

It was great to see two of your team in the final fight. I think Mac did a great job last night and you are correct that Tommy has a great future. When he continues to improve his skills he will be awesome.
It was very important for the viewers to see the good side of the sport that you displayed. You kept your head and came off as a professional despite the editing.
Keep up the good work. Lookign forward to seeing you win the belt back on December 29th.

It was great to see Mac and Tommy fight in the finals. I hope you would consider Tommy for your school. He seems like a younger version of you.
Train hard and be safe. Can’t wait to see you win against GSP.

matt, i hate to say but all of team hughes guys got beat in the finale , j-rock and war machine did put on the best show as far as the tuf season went and if clay woulg get a hair cut where he could see he might have missed getting hit with the big knee. i really wish tommy had better submission defence because he gets caught in them alot and with macs skill he wasn’t able to power out but they are both great fighters in thier own right, i will probably get hollered at alot about this post but i just say what i feel, still best of luck to you with gsp and can’t wait until your book comes out.

Ya, all your guys may have got beat in the undercards but the coolest thing is that two of them got to fight in the finals. Although I really really wanted Tommy to win, Mac also earned the victory and I’m just glad a Hughes guy won it. Heck, half the guys from the first season are in UFC now, I’m sure Tommy will make it in soon. Thanks for being such a sick tight coach for the season and can’t wait to see you own GSP coming up. God bless

TOMMY IS YOUNG IN THE SPORT AND WAS SOMEWHAT OVERWHELMED I THOUGHT BY THE EXPERIENCE (CAN’T BLAME HIM). MAC IS EXPERIENCED AND A TOUGH PERSON MENTALLY. HOPE YOU MAKE A CAMEO VISIT IN THE TUF 7 SERIES.
GO HARD OR GO HOME!

Hey Matt, I agree with you about Tommy’s fight. I was ready for him to come in against Mac with all these new tools to show off, but it really seemed like he was a little overwhelmed by the whole experience. It was nice to see both him and Mac show their class afterwards though. I thought the Huerta-Guida fight was good too, but I would’ve given fight of the night to Koppenhaver-Rollins. And Clay Guida needs to cut that hair! How can you worry about about fighting when you’re worried about seeing?! I wanna go through his fights and get an average of how many times he has to move his hair per minute.

I was really pulling for Tommy, but Mac did a great job. I know that Tommy has a future in UFC. He’s to good not to. It was awesome that even after all of the Serra BS, you had 2 guys in the final.
Good luck on the 29th. Too bad that it it’s GSP instead of Serra, I was looking forward to that little punk getting his. I”ll be watching and pulling for you!!
Best of luck!

I was a little sad that Tommy lost. Mac is a great fighter but I always like to see the underdog come out on top. Anyways, it was a great show–but, does anyone know what Dana’s big annoucement was? My DVR cut off right before it and I didn’t get to hear it.
On another note, Matt you did a great job this season ignoring Serra’s rude and arrogant comments. Every show he had something nasty and rude and totally inappropriate to say-I think you did an excellent job letting his crap roll off your back…can’t say that I would’ve been able to do the same! You showed us again that you live with integrity. No way could I ever be a fan of someone so cocky and arrogant and rude! And I would never encourage my kids to look up to such a jerk! Thanks again for being such a great person!

Dana’s big announcement….Forrest Griffin is going to be the T.U.F. 7 coach.
Later came out, that Rampage is going to be other coach, and at the end, they will fight for the title!!.

I was disappointed for Tommy, too, but he’ll be back. Like someone above said, I hope you’ll consider bringing Tommy in to your school. I thought Mac’s attitude was much better, and while I was rooting for Tommy, Mac was gracious in his victory and that was impressive.
For the one who asked about Dana’s big announcement: It was that the format for the next season of TUF has been completely revamped, and that Forrest Griffin is one of the coaches. The other coach was going to be accounced on the Video Game Awards show last night and I missed it so if anyone knows who the other coach is, please share!!
Looking forward to December 29th!

Meant to comment on Roger/Clay fight. I’ve really become a big fans of Roger’s after his last few fights and I was honestly pretty worried for him those first two rounds. You could see the look of frustration on his face but his way-laying on Clay in the last round was awesome. Clay reminds me a lot of Serra and I just can’t stand him.
I thought J-Rock fought a heck of a fight and I was disappointed that he lost. I can’t wait to see him back in the octagon again.
Do you know anything about TUF 7? I was wondering what weight class they’re going with.
I can’t wait to find out who the other coach is because Dana said they coaches were going to fight.

Matt,
That is awesome that you got to meet the governor and that he is such a huge fan. I am disappointed in the finale because I was rooting for Tommy, but like you said, he did place second. Take care and GOD BLESS!

matt,
i realized after the mac and tommy fight, the presentation was kind of weak, usually the winner gets a really nice watch and a car. if i were mac iwould feel really slighted even though he got the contract, but this is the first time i haven’t seen the winner get watches and a car and i have seen every season. maybe ufc couldn’t afford it since dana gave himself such a big raise.

The Finale was outrageously awesome! I really enjoyed it. so what are your thoughts on season 7 coming up. Are you pushing for either of the teams? Keep training hard and can’t wait for the GSP fight (just like everyone else) but the real fight will be you vs serra in the spring. that will be great!
December 10th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
Clay Guida is from my town……Johnsburg, IL. I don’t know him personally, but I hear he is a great guy. He fought like crazy…..and would have had it if it went to decision. Its been fun seeing him come up through the ranks…..I just didnt understand why someone compared him to Matt Serra???
December 10th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
The Ultimate Finale was great. I obviously wanted to see more Team Hughes guys win, but seeing an all Hughes final was worth it. I was really pulling for Tommy in the finale, but the environment and Mac’s experience was just too much for him this time. I know he’ll be back soon. I am looking forward to UFC 79 and to the book tour. Thanks for coaching this season against Serra and showing the world that you are not just a UFC Champion, but a Champion for GOD. Good luck in training and God Bless.
Hope Robbie defends his title on Dec. 15. Good luck.

I can’t help but wonder if Clay Guida intentionally has his hair flying around to make it difficult for his opponent to zero in on his chin. But that has GOT to make it more difficult for him to fight.
Like everyone else, apparently, I was disappointed to see Tommy lose, but Mac really did have a good gameplan, and I know that with experience, Tommy will improve drastically. Can’t wait to see more of him in the years to come!
Where was Matt Serra during the fights that his guys had at the TUF finale? Hmmmm…
God bless you, brother!

matt hughes fans such as myself, i know i have read a few post about serra not being at the tuf finale and not being there to receive his car for coaching this year. i have read somewhere that his doctor has ordered him not to travel or something like that because of his back. now i’m not making excuses for him in no means, but i gave had 3 back surgeries because od bulging, herniated and ruptured disc, now i have have svrews and plates in my lower back. before i had all these surgeries i was in so much pain i could put one foot in front of the other or sometimes even sleep.
as bad as i wanted to see matt hughes squash serra like a little bug on the 29th, all the Christian people talking about God bless this and God that, lets not to forget to keep matt serra in our prayers that he recovers properly and can come back to fight another day.

Thanks for giving me the info guys (Dana’s big announcement at the finale-I missed it). I appreciate it. I thought for a moment that someone else might be retiring! Glad to hear that Forrest will be coaching. He seems like such a nice guy and I like to watch him fight.
George, you are very right about keeping Serra in our prayers. After all, Jesus loves him the same as you and I and wants to see him come to salvation also! Thanks for the humbling advice. I pray that God will also heal you and give you back the use of your arm. God bless!

Big Ditto on praying for Matt Serra shalom1224!
December 11th, 2007 at 9:24 am
Looks like Rampage is the other coach for TUF7.
I’m the one that said Clay reminds me of Serra. I say that because there’s a difference in confidence and arrogance and to ME, personally, Clay seems very arrogant, and that really puts me off of fighters. I can’t be a fan of someone who thinks the world is graced by him being a fighter. I like to cheer for the fighters who go out and put on a great show for their fans, and show graciousness in victory AND defeat. Yes, Clay seemed gracious after the fight, but he’s just not my favorite fighter. No offense meant at all toward anyone here personally, and I’m sorry if it came across as such.

Just wanted to say that Gov. Perry of the Great State is a Fighting Texas Aggie Yell Leader WH08P!!!!

You’re right, George…and thank you for that word. We should be praying for those who despise us, since we need the gospel as much as they do! Good insight, bro!
December 11th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
No Problem, UFC_fan13, Thanks for clarifying that. I guess I hear more about Clay because he lives in my same town. I see him at Walmart and he is signing things for little kids and is very gracious. I see and hear more about him so I have different outlook. Everyone has their favorites…..and I think we all agree MATT HUGHES IS #1!
December 11th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
UFC_fan13,
I have to disagree with you on the Clay Guida comments. This guy is a fighter who isn’t the most talented in the division, but gives everything he has in the Octagon for himself and the fans… he understands the concept of entertainment while still fighting to win.
I was at UFC77 in Cincinnati and met a whole bunch of fighters (including Matt Hughes) and one of the most pleasant surprises in terms of approachability and attitude was Clay Guida. For the record, the biggest surprise was Jens Pulver, who was the most approachable fighter I have ever met. (That was a shock because I had a completely different opinion of him from his TUF stint)
Sometimes people will run you the wrong way for no reason, or for somethin g intangeable and maybe that’s what you are feeling with Guida. But trust me, as a rather impartial fan when it comes to the fighters, Clay Guida is far from arrogant.
Just my 2 cents… hope you give the guy another chance to win you over…

Matt,
The tractor is awsome. What a great reward for coaching. Any plans to come to Oklahoma for the book signing or something with Century Martial Arts Supply?
All of us “Okies” would be thrilled if you came down south for a book signing.
December 12th, 2007 at 9:58 am
UFCFAN.CA, thanks for your input on Clay. I think it’s great we can have civilized “conversations” here without people going nuts. I’ve been on a few message boards in the past where things have blown up when someone disagreed with someone else. Like I said, no offense was meant at all toward anyone here at all.
Maybe I just wanted Roger to win so badly, I had already made my mind up to dislike Clay. Whatever the reason, I appreciate your input.

You had an amazing season full of adventure. You lost some battles through the season but overall you won the war. I am very happy for Mac and I thought the guys had a great night of fighting. Thanks for being a part of this season and I cannot wait for the next. Most of all I cannot wait for the 29th and your fight good luck and god bless,

I just want to say that I have full faith in Matt and I know that he will win back his belt. I wish Matt was fighting Serra as I agree with the previous writers who say that he should get his as he is rude, crude and that is really not neccesary. Almost like the “little bullies” in school who are all talk. Anyway Matt as usual you did a great job on TUF and I think that if asked you should do it again. After all to be trained by Matt Hughes and your guys should be tha ultimate honor. In regards to GSP , Matt I really think this time you must ” guard your cup area” as I have seen many fights where he “accidentaly” kicks there. If that is his way of winning, then he does not belong. Hopefully he wont try that. Best of luck and LOVE the new tractor. Have fun with it and God Bless to you and your family.

We just want to say Congratulations on two things: one:having two fighters make the finale, and two: Being a good Strong Christian man, and role model. We both love to watch you fight, and well so does our son. It is good to know that not everyone in the sport has a potty mouth. Our son is only 2 but already shows interest in fighting… he is a boy, but when he hears the song before the tuf shows he comes running to watch, and doesn’t move a muscle till its over. I am sure we will be taking him to classes when he gets a little older, for now him and his dad do many exercises together and they ‘train’ or at least play train. Hope all goes will with your fight, I am sure it will you have the good Lord on your side! We will be praying for your safety, Hope you and your family have a wonderful and blessed Christmas. Remember Jesus is the Reason for the Season!!! God Bless you!
