GSP Fight…

   November 25th, 2007

As most of you know, Serra has dropped out of the fight due to a back injury. I found out and was told that I get to basically pick my opponent. The UFC had called some welterweights, some said they wouldn’t take the fight; but ultimately I got to choose and I chose Georges St. Pierre. I asked to fight GSP.

I think there are a few things that will be in my favor in doing this. I get to fight in Vegas, what I consider my home fighting area, NOT Canada. I don’t think it’s a big deal to switch an opponent over a month out, it’s just not a concern for me. Before I was fighting a guy holding the belt, now I’m fighting a guy that I consider number two in the world. Anyone who thinks this fight will be like the second fight with GSP will be shown wrong on December 29th. THIS IS MY FIGHT!

-Matt

Can’t wait to see you win on Dec. 29th. Train hard, be safe.

3dlee Says:

Matt, you’re the best. You chose quite possibly you’re toughest competition. And he WILL be impressed with your performance this time… Have a safe training and a great fight!

secondfavorite Says:

Matt, this is all you baby. Take him down, and ground and pound your belt back. May God give you the strength of Samson, the wisdom of Solomon and the fighting spirit of Gideon. I can’t wait!

george fagan Says:

i agree train like there is no tomorrow, best of luck when you fight gsp.

dscherer Says:

I have always thought of you having great stradegy. I think that you are correct. I believe that you were going to have to face GSP in your next fight anyway. Might as well get it done with in the U.S.

jhking33 Says:

Matt, you the man! You gained my respect for life a long time ago, now it’s time for GSP to understand why we are behind you no matter what, it’s how you carry yourself as a person and a fighter. This one is for you! Get R Done in Vegas, then Serra will get his! God Bless, be safe!

Vortex Says:

I LOVE IT!

;)

farmboy7652 Says:

I am glad to hear your thoughts about picking GSP. For what ever reason, it makes me feel better that you got to choose your opponent yourself. I guess I was worried that Dana would try and force some one on you, just to save the UFC from losing money on the pay per view. I can’t wait to hear “Preacher man says its the end of time” and then watch you take care of business. Thanks Nahum 1:7

mrandolph69 Says:

I cannot wait for this fight. I am even more excited about this match-up than the Serra fight!

xad Says:

Don’t try to stand and strike with him and don’t stand close/far enough for him to throw leg kicks without him paying the price for it. If he does want to throw leg kicks, force him to over extend by keeping some distance and frustrating him with constant movement. Don’t be too eager to engage immediately, take your time in frustrating GSP with movement and constant takedown attempts and clinchwork.

GSP has good standup, however, as we saw with Serra, he can get beaten in the standup as it’s not really as great as GSP thinks it is - the best thing he has is the ability to mix things up so his opponents can’t be 100% sure what strike he’s going to throw next. Serra though moved out of reach when GSP threw leg/head kicks and slipped under GSP’s jabs which GSP overcommits to a lot of times.

Stick to what you’re best at, take GSP down and GnP. If he gets up, repeat until GSP gets desperate and tired, and then repeat again. Punish him on the group and in the clinch. Don’t let him have space to throw his leg kicks and punches. Watch out for his inside leg kick, he snaps those out quite fast - constant movement and distance should frustrate him with his kicks.

I think it’s fair to say you’ll be the underdog going into this fight, so i hope you win as i love nothing more than an upset. Much respect for picking GSP as your next opponent.

Good luck

War Hughes….behind you all the way. Unleash the beast!!

Good luck Hughes! You won’t need it, but train hard!

PaleWriter Says:

Remember this Matt…it’s GSP’s fault Serra’s a champion.

ArmBarWins Says:

Matt I am a Canadian and was going to be rooting for GSP when you were to fight next. You calling him out and getting it made into a 5 round event is awesome. You are a heck of a competitor and champion. I no longer care who wins I just want to see you guys put it all out there. I can’t wait for this. Good training Matt.

Matt

caliphornia Says:

this is your fight indeed

MattHughesRocks Says:

Matt, I’m glad to see you have a real opponent this time ;) See you in Vegas!!

Godannar Junkie Says:

Matt I was a little worried about this fight coming the way it did. Initially I knew it wouldnt be like the last fight but I was still worried. After reading this entry I Am Not Worried. My opinion, play to your strength with ground and pound. Strike to clinch to take down and like XAD posted earlier repeat as often as possible. You are stronger than GSP. Do I think GSP has more tools? yes, but the fewer tools you have are vastly better than his which I believe gives you the win. I got to see Randy fight against Gonzaga in Vegas, you are the last guy I need to see in person. Bring it home baby! Prayers for health and clear mind from now until after the fight.

FishMonger Says:

Hello Mr. Hughes,

I am a big fan of the UFC and have great respect for all the fighter that step intot that ring, but i have to say Matt Serra isn’t one of them.
I am a Canadian - Newfoundlander (if you know Canada you’ll know Newfie’s are a breed of their own).
I was hoping to see you rush Serra and just ground and pund a ref stoppage. The way that guys talks, oh man.
And for any fighter not wanting to train with you…in my opinion is not really inderstanding their role in the sport.
I believe yourself and GSP are both top knotch atletes and beleieve it will be a good fight, and for me to pick a winner, nah. I get a thrill and learn alot from just watching two of the greatest in the octegon. I do however give you good blessings and hope the two of you come out of there in good health.

I want to see you knock that disrespectful idiots head off, Matt Serra is an idiot. And i agree not cornering his team on TUF WAS SO DISRESPECTFUL. i have lots to say.
Take Care

atHISfeet Says:

Dear Matt,

I actually am glad to see you fight GSP as opposed to Serra. Serra is not a worthy opponent. He does not deserver to be champion. He does not act like a champion.

Also, I wanted to thank you for you attentiveness to your blog. I have checked out the websites of many MMA fighters. Few have current comments for their fans. Fewer yet update it as much as you do. In fact, I have yet to find one that shares his heart as much as you do. You are a blessing to the body of Christ and the UFC.

You are in my Prayers,

Kal-el Says:

I was very upset that Serra got hurt and backed out of the fight. I have been looking forward to the fight ever since it was announced. Fighting GSP will be a big challenge but i believe that you are up for it. I recently watched you fight sherk at ufc 42 and i couldn’t believe how intense you were when you were fighting. You definately took the fight to him and imposed your will. I pray that you will be able to do the same to George. I would love to see you explode on George in the opening round and then take him down and pound him for the win. I’ll continue to pray for you and your ministry as you live as an example for those who believe. May God give you the strength of Samson and the wisdom of solomon as you prepare for war. God Bless

shooter1 Says:

just win. i was looking forward to seeing you smash serra, but i think this will be a much more meaningful win, over a much better fighter. bring that interim belt back to IL. then, someday, serra will be ready (hopefully) and you can get your strap back.

Groynkikt Says:

I can’t wit to see you crush GSP! It’s going to be a great fight!

Jesper Says:

I wish you the best in you fight against GSP.
There is no doubt in my mind that you will win!
Godspeed.

jimandcindy Says:

Was very concerned when I heard that Serra was hurt. I bought tickets at 12:01 when the presales opened, just to see you go up against Serra, because you have respect and he needs taught some. My husband and I almost asked for a refund, then I read your comment on GSP. You are my all time favorite, but I enjoy watching GSP also. We are still traveling from Missouri to Vegas to watch the fight and you win. Keep up the training and most of all keep preaching and teaching the word of God!! Those rewards are greater than any. I can’t wait to see you in Vegas. Tell the family hello and God Bless!!!

jhking33 Says:

Matt, I know I’ve already left a comment but I had to agree with another one of your fans. You are the ONLY fighter I have found as well that seems to really care about his fans and people in general. That is why I(we) have so much respect for you. Train like never before, be safe and God Bless you and your family.

thanks, John King

I have no doubt that Matt will win this fight. George is a great fighter but he lacks mental toughness. I am dissapointed not to see Matt beat the **** out of Serra. hope to see it one day. Good Luck!

I just want too say, I REALLY wanted to see you fight an destory that loud mouth Serra, but eh,… there will be time enough for that. Secondly.. I can understand you wanting it to be in the states, an even more so in Vegas i spose, cause thats where you had a lot of your big fights, an are comfortable there. But trust me you have a fan base in Canada, an was hoping to see it done there, just in my small group of UFC fans, bout 22 of us were ready for the 20 hour drive to see the fight. No worries though, we’ll get to see ya sometime! Be safe, an god bless!

theporkchopexpress Says:

Somehow you fighting GSP feels right. More so then exposing Serra as the one hit wonder fluke champ he is. I feel if you fight your fight and press GSP like you did in your 1st fight, he wont stand a chance. I know you’re drawing towards the end of your career dispite having many more fights left in you.. and although the desire for a big knock out to round out your legacy highlight reel may be in the back of your head some where, I urge you to stick with those talents and game plans that have served you so well in the past. The longer you stay on your feet, the longer he will try and foul you with low kicks to drop your guard the way he did in your last fight.

There is not a single 170lbs fighter in this world who is stronger or is a better wrestler. Take the fight to GSP, beat him, and go home and enjoy the fact you are the most prolific welterweight ever with your family.

We can all laugh when GSP complains about the short notice after he loses.

best of luck~

I am glad and sad. I can’t tell you how much I wanted you to fight Serra! He is one of those guys that just rubs you the wrong way. I am happy to see you get your rematch with GSP. I know that all your fans are behind you and we all know you can beat GSP I just want to see Matt Hughes with no judges involved!

Good luck Matt
John

Georgia Bulleydawg Says:

I hate that Serra won’t get the chance to back up all that mouth he runs. Will the outcome of the GSP fight have any consequence to whether you and Serra ever get to (eventually) go? Well I hope that the Matt Hughes that shows up December 29th is the same one I saw beat down Royce Gracie and then B.J. Penn. Even though the Penn fight was much tougher, you still seemed sharp and focused- just fighting a tough and worthy opponent. Even though St. Pierre is as tough and worthy as Penn, you did NOT look sharp in your last two fights. Even with that last win in Ohio, I felt a little cheated as a fan. I’m not signing up to fight you anytime soon (not even if you were a quadriplegic), I just want to know if you still want that title the way you did against Gracie and Penn. I give you Kudos for asking for GSP, at least you still have the courage. Even though Serra beat him down like Rodney King, GSP is no slouch. I hope you give Frenchie the beating of a lifetime. We will be watching down in Georgia, so make us proud.

AirborneSaint Says:

I just read your blog and I could do nothing more than shake my head. Once again you have shown the world what true character is. A lesser man would’ve taken a lesser opponent; you’ve chosen one of the best in GSP, and even though I don’t care for St. Pierre I do think he is one of the best in the welterweight division. However; I also think that you are THE best in the division.
I will continue to pray for you, your safety, and that the Lord would see fit to grant you the grace to win another championship for His glory.

patbb Says:

Hey Champion!
Firstly, congrats on picking GSP.

Secondly; please don’t do the obvious!!!
Everyone thinks that you will train to take him down and GnP; they will think that too!
He will spend his entire training working on take down defence and ground work. He will also work on trying to knock you down with kicks and knees everytime you dive in to take him down.
Noone has ever been able to control GSP on the ground and do any damage.

Surprise everybody; show the world that The Champion is not too old to reinvent himself!

Train some crazy kicks and your stand up game and knock him off standing!!!

Your the best man! Be a legend!

kyle Says:

lets hope so! Good luck and God bless.

i’ve saidgood luck already , my question is i’ve read several things in here about your ministry, are you also a preacher?

baldprof Says:

Wow. I have read all these posts and I don’t recall ever seeing such a response before.

The choice of GSP definitely shows that quality called “character”.

I just set my computer’s desktop wallpaper to a picture of Matt. I want ev eryone to know who I back, regardless of how it turns out.

God bless.

melann1 Says:

I am sure the GSP is a guy you would have wanted to fight anyways. Maybe Serra won’t fight in the next year….and that means you get the title……..knowing that you will beat GSP. Good Luck! Looking forward to December 29th!

HUGHES VS GSP: HUGHES RD 2: REAR NAKED CHOKE

towardszion Says:

Matt, IT BETTER BE YOUR FIGHT!!! You cannot afford to lose this one. There is too much at stake and I do believe you know it well. GSP wants his title back. He is coming hungry in this fight. But you have a different mindset in this fight too, so I KNOW this is going to be the crown of your career, 10 times UFC champion.

I hope is not going to be any bashing this time between you and GSP. Two class acts are going to be in that octagon. Be like the Gladiator and say that you are going to give us something that we’ve never seen before. This is a sport and you guys are two wonderful athletes.

“The righteous one will live by faith”, that means even this victory will be won by faith. Amen.

bdriscol Says:

All the best Matt. I hope you come out with a great game plan and get your title back. I know you’re far too experienced and good a fighter to make the same mistakes. I cannot wait to see the belt back around your waist. I’ll be praying for you.

rearnakedchoke Says:

Matt… I hope you know what you are getting into .. I am sure this will be a different fight this time around, but I don’t see the outcome being any different. I am not saying you can’t win, after all BJ owned you in the first fight, and you were the underdog in the second fight and basically pummelled him into a stoppage … but I think GSP is on a different level .. I am just looking to see a great fight … win or lose, you are still the greatest welterweight of all time … train safe

NateR Says:

You’re right, rearnakedchoke, Matt has had a total of 11 title fights and has won 9 of those. GSP has had 3 title fights and has won only 1 of those. Matt won 6 title fights before his first loss, GSP lost his very first title fight… to Matt.

So, GSP and Matt are on different levels. Matt is just on a higher level. :)

rearnakedchoke Says:

oh Nate … nice way to twist things … i didn’t totally count matt out, because I have seen him and know his talents … i just think that matt is in the twilight of his career and gsp is just starting his … matt will have to do a lot to win this … remember, in their first fight, it was georges 8th fight .. and matt had 40 give or take a few … i just think that matt is going from an almost definite win (cuz i don’t think much of serra) to an almost definite loss …. so, we will come back to this conversation after the fight … i will admit i was wrong .. will you??

WalterBailey Says:

Matt,
You know I’m a big fan an I consider you a personal friend, having said that, this GSP fight is a bad deal for all of us Hughes fans. I read that GSP is at the very top of his game right now. I’m mad and I am furious at this outcome. Bad back or no bad back…The UFC should have awarded you the belt!! If I were you, I would drop out of this fight.

WalterBailey

george fagan Says:

walter, walter, walter, never let them see you sweat, not that matt hughes should sweat this fight with gsp, they are bth mma fighters, both have won and lost fights, life does go on.

Tony Bo Says:

Would have liked to see you fight Serra…he is/was training specifically for your fight. But the whole GSP thing…if you win, I am not sure I would chalk it up as a great win. Lets be realistic…its a last minute fight for GSP, he probably wont be at 100% …..so I EXPECT you to win. Now if GSP wins…..now that..that would be a great win (again, considering its a last minute event for GSP).
Prayers for both of you great fighters …..be safe….and l look forward to a great event..!!

Cristopher Says:

Hopefully matt hughes reads this, i hope you win better train hard, btw i was very surprised about what u said about wanting to fight silva

Cristopher Says:

I Hope you win train hard and don’t take this fight lightly come in there hungry and wanting it.

Timber Says:

Matt,
I read that you are glad that this fight with GSP is in Vegas not Canada. As a big UFC fan living up here I think this would have been a great first UFC for Canada. Are you kidding me, GSP would be the fan favourite but don’t count out the Hughes fans up here. It would be tough cheering against one of the best, if not the best, Canadian in the UFC. Either way it would have been a big event up here. If held in Montreal or Quebec City it would have been amazing. The entire cities would have gone nuts like nothing the UFC has seen before. I can appreciate the fact the fight would have been a lot tougher for you up here…but that is why we are all such big fans of yours, never back down from a challenge and never take the easy road…when you defeat GSP and then Mr. Big mouth, do you think Dana White will set up a fight with GSP and big mouth for a second shot at you? (when GSP beats big mouth then the rematch can be up here!!!)

Jetexas Says:

Hey Matt,
Thanks for taking the high road with this Serra situation. I was looking forward to you shutting his big, fat, joey bag of doughnuts mouth with a severe beating, but I guess that will have to wait. I would suggest wearing an iron cup against George this time (Those low kicks were B.S. last fight). I am look forward to upcoming victory!
Best regards,

BEEEE-YOND excited for this fight!

goitzy Says:

Matt,

There are tons of Canadian fans who hope you kick GSP’s ass. He is a great fighter but really doesnt give you the respect your deserve. That being said we are wondering if you are giving the Canadian fans the respect they deserve. Wanting the fight NOT to be in Canada is a strong statement which we are hoping you would clarify.

Benjamin Job Huddleston Says:

Matt I will enjoy watching this fight. You and GSP are my favorite fighters in welterweights. As for Serra i would love to see you stomp the crap outa him. Now I get to see you go all the way and fight hard. Train hard matt! This will be a great fight!

Brother Phil Says:

Mr Hughes, I think it will be GREAT to see you fight again. I hope you beat GSP’s butt, eh? lol In all seriousness, i TRULY think what hurt Serras’s back was all the WORRY and FEAR he had to carry on his shoulders knowing you were going to turn him inside out and hand his big mouth to Big John. I think his MOUTH wrote checks that his ass cant cash, in the octagon. I couldnt believe the total disrespect he demonstrated on the show. HOW UN~PROFESSIONAL can one loser be?? I think that perhaps after he shot his mouth off all the time on T.V. and came back to reality, he got scared and whined like the bitch he is, as he realised that he was going to be totally embarrassed when you handed him his hat, after your now canceled fight. All i can say is my moneys on you , if he ever works the courage up to fight you in the ring. Train hard, like you always do, fight safely, and knock GSP out in the 2nd round. Id consider it a personal favor !!!!! YOU are the greatest in your weight class. We ALL look forward to Dec. 29ths fight.

Fight4Christunlimited Says:

Number 69, wow, and i wanted to be first…

Fully backing you up. i was down when i heard about serra, but then i got real excited about you and GSP. this will be great! You are going to simply win the fight. i wont say you will wipe the floor with him, because although you surely could, i figure you want to show him why you were about to win the belt befor you finish him. lookin forward to it. and as always. Fight Hard. Live Strong. Laugh Loud. And Love Deep.

Joe Says:

Matt,

I flew all the way across the Unites States of America, from Orlando to Sacramento to watch your last fight against GSP live. It infuriated me to hear the crowd cheer for GSP. There is a bit of revenge in this for all of us. You are not walking into the octagon alone. Not one of us renounced after that fight, and now we are all still here to relish and glorify Him, through you, with a victory…. VICTORY!!!

docholliday Says:

Matt,
I believe Serra’s back will mysteriously be healed 5 minutes after you announce your retirement after a few more of fights. I would put money on the possibility the Hughes/Serra fight never happens. He has finally found his way out. He probably won’t fight simply because he just can’t stand the thought of losing to you. He had enough anxiety just rematching a has-been like Shonie Carter and you ain’t Shonie. Please! And to think Dana thought he was worthy to coach TUF. Look at the past show’s coaches and now look who just lowered the bar. I guess now we can look forward to his buddy Joey for TUF 7.

I bet St Pierre would truly rather fight Serra any day than you again.

investorchicago Says:

Matt, are you training with some top boxers, muay thai and jiu jitsu people? I would love to see you beat GSP. He trains with some of the top people in the world. Sometime thats what it takes to take a person to the next level.

tmac Says:

Now I am really confused, Yahoo and different places are saying GSP went looking for this fight. When I read your blog you indicate that you went looking for the fight. Who initiaded this fight? I am sure you want to revenge your last fight with GSP, and even though you won the previous one fair and square withthe arm bar GSP was about to finish you, you got the arm and one congrats.

I was just starting to like you a bit watching you in TUF again, more so disliking Matt Serra and wanted to see you shut that the man complexed squeeky voice twit. But being Canadian and a GSP fan to the end I would like to know who asked first for the fight. I would hope the UFC will allow you to fight Serra to see who will fight GSP should he win. But as we all know anything can happen in a fight. Matt Serra got lucky on a lot of levels against GSP and he did win, that day he should have bought a ticket for the super ball because I think he would stand a better chance of winning that than beating you or GSP ever again. Lets face it, Serra is the hey spike! hey spike! what do you think spike? that should be spit bail guy in corner for the likes of you and GSP.

Although cheering for GSP wish you luck and should you ever decide to retire please fight one last time to shut up Serra so he remains a blip on the radar of UFC

[Matt Hughes was the one scheduled to fight on December 29th, so in the end it was his decision and his alone to fight a different opponent or just wait for Serra to heal. GSP might have asked to fight Matt, but ultimately it was Matt's decision to fight GSP, fight someone else, or just not fight at all. Matt chose to fight GSP. -NateR]

Kelligh Says:

It would be nice if you would be able to get your hands on Matt Serra, but it will still be a great fight for you. Good luck Matt!!!

Buckeye Says:

This was such a smart move Matt! Knowing GSP’s mind isn’t always in the game, catching him off guard like this increases your chances. Great idea, he’ll be caught off guard and way less focused then he would have been expecting the fight…Go Matt!
The only sad part of this is that Matt Serra can continue this mirage of a championship run. We all know who the real hall of famer (cough) I mean champion is :)

ratone0956 Says:

I cant wait to see u fight GSP,but i realy wanted to see you fight serra, just to show him whos a better coach&fighter well good luck matt!!!!!!!

Buckeye Says:

Matt I think you should be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame now, you are one of the most accomplished MMA fighters in history. You may even be the MOST accomplished.
Do you know or does anyone know if there is another champion that’s had more successful defences or title bouts in the history of MMA?

HughesFan84 Says:

Just wanted to wish you luck in your upcoming fight against GSP. You’ll have a cheering section in small town Iowa. We will be praying for God to give you what you so deserve-YOUR FIGHT!

fortunedog Says:

It’s admirable that you would pick the toughest opponent out there for your fight. It says tons about your character and confidence. Having met you a few times at local fight venues in Central Illinois, plus having some people we know in common, it’s almost like having a family member in there when you step into the ring. Stay focused, and know that we’ll be watching and rooting for you.

blamere Says:

Matt you are an absolute professional when it comes to representing the UFC, I gained lots of respect for you in watching TUF, the way you carry yourself, what a professional! Now Matt Serra on the other hand always bad mouthing you AND your guys is no way for a champion to represent the sport! I hope you get to fight him and just G N P him into oblivion!!!

Best of luck with the GSP fight, I will be watching!

warrior4calvary Says:

You never cease to amaze me Matt. You didn’t have to fight your toughest opponent and yet that’s exactly what you CHOSE to do. It’s just one more reason why you’ll always be the epitomy of a champion in my book, win or lose. Of course I’ll be praying for your victory though. I know you’ll take the fight to him and give it your all. Bring your belt home Matt and show the world why a country boy can survive!!

Matt-
I wish you nothing but the best of luck, and I pray you will bring your “A” game, because when you do, and you fight to your strengths, and not your opponenst weaknesses, I have a hard time seeing you on the bad end of the fight. Matt I dont need to wish you luck because you are a man that is multi skilled in and out of the octgon. Never have I seen a mma fighter with the resume and record of stylish accomplishments that you have aquired. I started to follow your carrer in 2002 and was blown away by your performance one after the other. No one has ever taken down Royce Gracie in the manner that you did. No matter what happens on 12/29/07 you will always the #1 champion ever to step into the mma world. Matt Sera disrespects you because he knows he cannot beat you, although he is a good bowler.
