Matt Serra Withdraws from UFC 79 Due to Injury
November 23rd, 2007
|
As of now, Matt Serra is out of the fight because of a herniated disc in his lower back. I believe Serra is actually hurt, so I don’t think this is just a ploy not to fight. Before my Royce fight, I had three bulged discs that I was able to repair enough to fight. As everybody knows you never go into a fight 100%. So, I’m just going to continue to train until I find out what’s next. -Matt |

that really sucks that he pulled out with injury. As frustrating and upsetting it is for us fans I am sure it must be more so for you. All the best as you continue to train.

I really hope GSP is able to train within the 4 weeks so you guys could have the rubber match for an Interim Title. That truly seems to be the best option, although I doubt 4 weeks is enough time for a fight of this magnitude. Time will tell.

[...] Matt Hughes isn’t such a bad guy after all. The former Welterweight Champion was all class when he responded to Serra’s withdrawal from UFC 79. Seems like Hughes is taking this very professionally and is patiently waiting to see what plans the UFC has in store for him. Here’s Hughes’ reaction taken from his official website: [...]

I hate to hear that because I feel he deserves to lose the belt and of course to you. I hope you wait to fight Serra as long as he doesn’t need 6 years to recover. He will need 6 years to recover after you get done with him. Be safe, keep training.

Bummer. We had a party planned at our local cigar shop, too. Italian beef and all of the trimming for Matt Hughes fans and balogna for Serra fans.
Looking forward to the re-schedule!
November 23rd, 2007 at 4:10 pm
Awww man this sucks I was so waiting for you to shut him up! Oh well I guess I will have to wait a little longer to see you win your belt.
November 23rd, 2007 at 5:28 pm
Are you still fighting? I spent over 2000 dollars to watch you fight. I wish they would make an intern belt for you and allow you to still fight. By the time he recovers he will have been champ for over a year and never defended. That my friend is crap!!!!

Thats no good..I was so excited to soo you whoop him and finally shut his cocky little mouth up. Maybe he hurt it trying to do another Matt Hughes impersonation!

This will equal one title defense in the last four PPV’s. Could be five depending if one considers Penn VS. Stevenson a true title defense. I am going to hit a sports bar from now on, at least until they get some actual title fights. I don’t think UFC 81 even has a title fight yet! Make it six!

serra really wussed out
November 23rd, 2007 at 8:07 pm
I dont like it when fighters fight hurt, but serra hasnt defended his title at all yet, which he won as a fluke anyhow, but i am starting to get a little frustrated in the lack of title defenses here lately, for one we have the heavyweight division currently without a title defense due to Randy Couture being in limbo, and the LW division being in limbo to Sherk appealing his hearing, and now the WW division due to an undeserving champ being injured ( i hate saying undeserving and fluke but c’mon), and possibly the LHW division with Rampage being hurt, When do we get to see a title defense and get to see you BACK IN ACTION, the only dependable division is the MW and that is a joke right now, how many times can we see Anderson Silva manhandle anyone he comes in contact with, or for that matter anyone Rich Franklin comes in contact with other than Silva. At this point all i can see happening is you moving up in weight and take the belt from A. Silva, then drop back down and take the belt from Matt “the ferry” Serra. Good luck to you in whatever comes from here

I really hope Hughes still fights on this card. I got tickets and I am coming from Nova Scotia, Canada just to see Matt fight. It is my girlfriends and mine one year anniversary gift to each other. I really hope Matt still fights.

suck man oh well another day then guess it’ll have to be 08 before i see you kick Serra’s keester, hope he recovers soon!

Now that you announced you would only be having a few more fights it gives him reason to duck you until you retire. He has excuse to not have to facing you and all the trash talk he did and think he is saving face. Weasles are like that by nature.
November 24th, 2007 at 1:07 am
What can I say? I don’t like it. To bad
November 24th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
BREATHE…haha. I guess we will have to wait to see you win the belt back…it will be worth the wait! Peace, Pete

Matt we all knowit’s only a matter of time before you become the champ again, this just gives him more time to hold the belt till you fight him and tko him in the first round .I was at the fight in houston and he got lucky everyone there knew it.Good luck on your training champ and looking foward to seeing you in the octagon again.

was ready to see him lose the belt to you
November 24th, 2007 at 6:31 pm
Matt,
Keep your head up. I know it has to be frustrating. But I believe there is a reason for everything.
November 24th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Matt, This is just a way for Serra to stay the champ. While he is at home wishing your going to take a fight with some one else. What do you have to gain by fighting any one other than Serra? I am sure the money for this pay per view is a nice chunk of change. But if your injured or even worse that puts you back to fighting 3 to 4 more times to get a title shot. Which is what Serra is praying for. Oh I forgot he doesn’t believe in GOD I am with you ethier way, but I would hold little Mr. White’s feet to the fire for my title shot. And not just fight any person they drag in just because the UFC stands to lose millions if you don’t fight. If you don’t fight I don’t buy the pay per view. And I know there are many that will do the same. Thanks
November 25th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
I am very glad you are fighting in UFC 79. I too, think Serra is glad to not be fighting you. In my opinion, if you have to constantly talk trash about your opponent, you are making up for lack of physical ability. Serra knows you would have kicked his butt all over the octagon. I think he has terrible sportsmanship and is a bad example for the sport.
It should be a very good fight with G. S. Pierre…..but no doubt you will win it!! Can’t wait for Dec. 29th!!!
November 26th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Wow - What BS - I was so looking forward to seeing Serra get his ass handed to him. This injury seems way to convenient. As others have said on this blog - he may just be dodging you until you retire.
This fight was the first fight I have been genuinely excited about since …..hmmmmm- I can’t even remember. Most of the recent Pay Per Views have been horrible. In fatc the last one was a waste of money - not one good fight.
Well Matt don’t let him get away with it - call him out - and please don’t retire until you teach him some humility.

i’ve already said i’m a stroke victim and paralyzed in my left arm, before that happenrd i was disabled because of 3 back surgeries, the third one the doctor had to do a fusion and put hardware in my lower back, so i know back pain because of disk problems, but serre is lucky because he was going to get worse pain in his face than his back has ever felt.

Will Dana still let you break Serra’s jaw? It’s only fair considering all of the trash talking he’s done.

I was very dissapointed to hear that serra has dropped out of the fight after all of his trash talk i could not wait to see you tear him apart. And he knew you was going to you can just look at him and tell he is all talk and no action. Glad to see you are man enough to still fight at 79 wished we could say the same about serra!!!
