Matt’s TUF6 Journal - Episode 7

TUF6

First some questions:

Did you do guided Bible studies everyday or was it just the one shown in episode 2?

I wouldn’t say we did any guided Bible studies, my main reason for handing out the Bibles was to give those guys time to read. I never really gave a Bible study, I just wanted to introduce the book to those that maybe have never read it. And those that do enjoy reading it were going to get the opportunity to continue reading it.

How do you think you would have handled the Joe Scarola situation if he had been on your team?

Well, I really don’t know what i would have done; but I do think I could have kept him on the show.

First off, I know I got bleeped this week, but what I was saying was definitely not the “f-word.” I’m human and I get mad just like everybody else, so I’m really not worried about that one slip.

One thing I want to say about tonight’s episode is that J-Rock fought a good fight; but the one thing bad about ‘production’ is the fact that I can talk good about J-Rock’s fight for 59 minutes and then say something critical for a minute and all they show is that one minute. At the end of J-Rock’s fight I was frustrated. I believe J-Rock was a lot better than he showed in that fight, so that was what got me down.

I didn’t really know what to think after his fight, but to be honest I was getting used to not winning the fights so it wasn’t making it any worse. At this point, I was just thinking that I’ve got one more guy. Tommy is a guy that I wanted to hold back until the very end, because he’s a lot like me and I think I have a lot I can show him. So actually I’m just trying to be realistic and thinking that I’ve still got one more guy that I can try to get into the next round.

As far as what’s going on at the house with Team Serra, I didn’t know anything about that so there’s really nothing I can say.

pitbull22 Says:

Just wanted to know how you felt about what Mac Danzig said about something along the lines of you where too hard on the younger guys who where giving it their all he felt but only had limited skills from only being in the game a short period of time, and that the Serra thing was getting in your head.

shooter1 Says:

i really thought j-rock would give it a good go. i think he would have done better if he would have brought some of the intensity he displayed throwing stuff around after the fight into the octagon with him. he sure “pulled the trigger” on that chair.

neezar086 Says:

Mac Danzig complains alot and usually I try to tune it out. However, this week I was happy to hear him complaining about you being hard on the guys. At least that told me that you had them thinking even long after practice. Something needed to get their butts thinking! At some point, when you are a coach and are frustrated you will try anything. It seems like maybe you have hit this point. I hope it worked! God bless. Denise

Steven Says:

Matt:

Fighting is an individual sport. All a coach can do is help you train and improve, and help you set a good gameplan. You definitely know what to do to get these guys into shape, and you have proven that you can be a great corner for a fight.
Guys like J-Rock, Dan and Blake don’t seem to have all the tools needed to fight in the UFC. J-Rock talks a good game and cries a lot, but he had zero intensity in the Octagon.
As you have said, and as I know, fighting is 50% mental. If these guys lack the mental discipline to listen and execute a game plan, what are you supposed to do?
In the Trigg fights, and your last fight with Penn, you showed courage, poise and composure. If you hadn’t had the menatl discpline to be composed and workout out of the jams you were in, you would have lost.
You are a great fighter and a great role model.

gmoser Says:

Man, J-Rock had George down for 1 second and imediately had him in a kimora. Makes you kindof wonder what would have happened if he took him down. It always stinks losing but it is a lot worse when it is to somebady like George. NOW THAT GUY IS AN EGO MANIAC!!!

Lion of Jericoh Says:

If I may make a humble suggestion,

I know the show is over, so I guess its more of a question than a suggestion.
Did you train your guys to listen to your corner during the fights? (I know how that sounds so pleas hear me out)

I have fought a fight vs a Mr Serra cornered fighter, the completely inane things he yells has absolutely nothing to do with any sort of instructions he is trying to give his fighter for the most part. He is playing a very good game, he is drowning the opposing fighters corner out and serving his best to confuse the opposing fighter (and sometimes he is even just trying to get the fighter angry at him to take you out of your fight)

So, with the inexperienced fighters did this ever come into play? For example Dan looked confused and “didn’t listen”, from what you could see on TV (mind you I fully understand the beauty of the inaccurate point of view TV can give)
Dan was definitely confused, but I don’t think he was not listening on purpose, I think he got awestruck by the stage he was on.

that said were there ever and drills done to teach them to listen to their corner? for example sparring matches where you cornered one spar partner and one of the assistant coaches cornered the other, with the assistant constantly screaming things that you would normally hear the opposing corner bantering?

The J fight . . . well that was just a good shot by George. There is no such thing as a lucky shot, he just got caught with a well placed good shot.

oufan24 Says:

Hey Matt, I know these losses can get pretty frustrating. Keep your head up and continue on the path you are laying out for your guys. There are so many people out there that look up to you. “Proverbs 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps”. You are laying the course out for these guys, but ultimatley the Lord is going to direct them where to go. I believe there is a reason your guys are losing, but it only takes 1 to win the competition. God may be saying to trust in me, right now may be rough, but the outcome will be great. Have a good day!

UFC_fan13 Says:

J Rock might have fought a good fight, and let me preface that I don’t know how it feels to lose a fight, but his little temper tantrum was totally uncalled for.

I wasn’t impressed with last night’s show at all. Even though you don’t know about the junior high games Serra’s team was playing in the house I have to comment on it anyway. Ben was mouthing because George didn’t wake anyone else up, and another said they needed an alarm clock? What the heck - they’re adults. Let them drag their sorry butts out of bed themselves. I’m sorry but they need to pull up their big boy pants and deal.

And I was so hoping to see a huge turn-around in intensity of your guys after you told them you walked away from your 10-month-old baby girl for them. Didn’t seem to phase them, in my opinion. But I think my favorite part of last night’s show was the part of the post-fight clips where all you did was make a face of disbelief and I could hear you saying you just didn’t have any words to share. LOL

Honestly, I’ll be glad when this season is over.

Erin Says:

How hard is it to get on this show? If there are guys getting on there with only 1 or 2 fights and then some with no fights at all, just honestly, how hard is it? Is it just a matter of showing up at the tryouts and having a little experience in different areas? Have they had the tryouts already for the heavyweights for the next TUF? Maybe they should look harder.

Fight4Christunlimited Says:

it’s funny, i have been watching ufc and tuf for a while now and i have made certain descisions about who is a good guy and who is a bad guy. matt, your a good guy. serra, he’s a bad guy. just remember, God shows his greatest glory in graveyards. sometimes he waits till the last second to catch us and somehow that proves his glory all the more. we’re praying for you matt. fight the good fight.

lilmeanie26 Says:

I know this isn’t on the subject at hand but I thought it was a beautiful story. I wanted to share it with everyone I could. Enjoy.

This is Beautiful!! Try not to cry!

Sally jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She said: “How is my little boy? Is he going to be all right? When can I see him?”

The surgeon said, “I’m sorry. We did all we could, but your boy didn’t make it.”

Sally said, “Why do little children get cancer? Doesn’t God care any more? Where were you, God, when my son needed you?”

The surgeon asked, “Would you like some time alone with your son? One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes, before he’s transported to the university.”

Sally asked the nurse to stay with her while she said good-bye to son. She ran her fingers lovingly through his thick red curly hair.

“Would you like a lock of his hair?” the nurse asked.

Sally nodded yes. The nurse cut a lock of the boy’s hair, put it in a plastic bag and handed it to Sally. The mother said, “It was Jimmy’s idea to donate his body to the University for Study. He said it might help somebody else. “I said no at first, but Jimmy said, ‘Mom, I won’t be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy spend one more day with his Mom.” She went on, “My Jimmy had a heart of gold. Always thinking of someone else. Always wanting to help others if he could.”

Sally walked out of Children’s mercy Hospital for the last time, after spending most of the last six months there. She put the bag with Jimmy’s belongings on the seat beside her in the car. The drive home was difficult. It was even harder to enter the empty house. She carried Jimmy’s belongings, and the plastic bag with the lock of his hair to her son’s room. She started placing the model cars and other personal things back in his room exactly where he had always kept them. She laid down across his bed and, hugging his pillow, cried herself to sleep.

It was around midnight when Sally awoke. Laying beside her on the bed was a folded letter. The letter said:

“Dear Mom, I know you’re going to miss me; but don’t think that I will ever forget you, or stop loving you, just ’cause I’m not around to say I LOVE YOU. I will always love you, Mom, even more with each day. Someday we will see each other again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy so you won’t be so lonely, that’s okay with me. He can have my room and old stuff to play with. But, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn’t like the same things us boys do. You’ll have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like, you know. Don’t be sad thinking about me. This really is a neat place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything. The angels are so cool. I love to watch them fly. And, you know what? Jesus doesn’t look like any of his pictures. Yet, when I saw Him, I knew it was Him. Jesus himself took me to see GOD! And guess what, Mom? I got to sit on God’s knee and talk to Him, like I was somebody important. That’s when I told Him that I wanted to write you a letter, to tell you good-bye and everything. But I already knew that wasn’t allowed. Well, you know what Mom? God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel who is going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked Him ‘Where was He when I needed him?’ “God said He was in the same place with me, as when His son Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as He always is with all His children.

Oh, by the way, Mom, no one else can see what I’ve written except you. To everyone else this is just a blank piece of paper. Isn’t that cool? I have to give God His pen back now. He needs it to write some more names in the Book of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. I’m, sure the food will be great.

Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I don’t hurt anymore. The cancer is all gone. I’m glad because I couldn’t stand that pain anymore and God couldn’t stand to see me hurt so much, either. That’s when He sent The Angel of Mercy to come get me. The Angel said I was a Special Delivery! How about that?

Signed with Love from God, Jesus & Me.

whatexitru Says:

Matt, you hang in there. I said it before and I will say it again - no one really cares about the TUF fighters. But the whole MMA world will be watching when you fight Serra. In fact, I will go so far as to say that your (excellent) reputation depends on you whalloping Serra from here to Kingdom come….you’re the best ever welterweight. But you HAVE to decisively beat this clown fair and square.

Hmmmm, last nights show, where to start?….lets see. J-Rock’s whining, high-pitched voice reminded me of Mike Tyson, as did his excellent body conditioning. He even broke down and cried (before the fight) like Tyson used to do. However, any and all comparisons to MT ended the moment he got into the ring. Barely threw a punch, barely did anything at all EXCEPT get knocked out. J-Rock, you better call the CardioPolice because your heart is missing!!! And the stupid temper tantrum in the dressing room AFTER you got your a** kicked was laughable and embaressing. You do realize that you gave the chair the fight you were supposed to give George??? Lol….aaaaaanyway…

RCSZach Says:

Hey Matt, I was really surprised to see J-Rock’s octagon persona. For someone who seems so intensely emotional about fighting before and after the fight, he sure didn’t do much but paw at George during the fight. I also thought that your guys were being babies when talking about your criticisms during training after Dan’s fight. I saw your coaching as trying to motivate and fire your guys up. I’ve played plenty of team sports, and I think there’s nothing wrong with coaching your men that way, and I personally have always found it to be effective. I don’t think being tired and beat up after a competition has anything to do with giving it your best shot, and I don’t think giving a poor performance should ever be reinforced with praise. I realize Dan had only a handful of professional fights previous to the show, but honestly, he said himself that he saw Ben as dazed, so why didn’t common sense kick in to make Ben try to stand and defend himself as everything flickers in and out of focus? And along that same note, Danzig had absolutely no room to criticize you after the way he went after Bowman for being inexperienced.

JaydaSupaFlyBoyZz Says:

I dont know if u agree with me, but @ this point i dont think it about who better than who anymore Mr. Hughes. Its just ur guys kindda lack of confidence cuz they are down 5-1 b4 Jrock fight, Serra team those guys aint any better guys on ur team, but they do feel very confidence and motivate to be the same result alike those previous bout. That all i dont think its ur fault or the guys dont train hard enough, u can tell by the way they fights with out confidence no fire or anger in their eyes, u even said ‘Jrock look alike he doesnt want it to be in there and Dan was scare and kinda ran around the cage’ i think with out confidence u already lose b4 the fight even start. So yeah but hey 1 guy left dont gave up yet, 2 to 6 sound ok atleast u get the last laugh to close out the Qfinal fight,,haha u know i will laugh my @ss off if 1 of ur guy win the finaly, and Serra get his @ss kick when he defend his belf,,that mean everything work so hard to accomplish during TUF for nothing. PLZ ruin his 2007 new year by beating Serra @ss up and take his belt ,and after hmm let me see Koscheck will kick his ass, BJ too,Diego ect like i said he still a noob in wel weight D. GO TEAM HUGHES

Big Perk Says:

Matt I figure it had to be tough on you while the show was filming. I gotta a question though, who was that guy that J-Roc called a which doctor and then when his name showed up it had which doctor below it. I figure they were just trying to be funny. I hope training is going well and I hope you knock Serra into next century. God Bless.

crispy4christ Says:

Matt, I was also taken off guard from the cussing last night, but i know that you have every reason to be pissed right now and it made me real happy to see that you felt bad about it. You’re Christ-like example really is impressive and Im glad that there’s someone like you in Ultimate Fighter. I know that you may feel like you’re wasting your time on this show, but you’re not, you’re setting an example on national television and in the lives of these guys. Im a 17 year old guy trying to make a lot of big decisions and you’re really a hero of mine. God’s smiling down on you right now. Hang in there, fight the good fight, and thanks for keeping your faith and morals in a dark place. Good luck and will always be praying for you dude!

george fagan Says:

matt, i am a 51 year old man, stroke victim, paralyzed in my left arm which leaves me with the use of only one arm and i could have put up a better fight than j- rock did. he had fear in his eyes and you could see it, big talk, cruise into the finals what a wuss.if you don’t train and get youself ready for serra because your team is only going to win one fight and if you don’t beat matt serra, you will never hear the end of it because every time he gets a little air time he will mention how his team dominated your team and he beat you. please beat him on dec. 29, for the sake of your fans and the sake of the ufc and mma.
george fagan

george fagan Says:

another little note, j-rock it is easy to beat up a plastic chair that doesn’t fight back, if you are lucky enough to get back into a ufc cage after your poor performance, try taking a little of that aggression out on the guy you are in the octagon with. matt hughes, you said it best when you said you picked the wrong guys, i don’t want to hear about stage fright, inexperence, because serras team is going through the same thing, only difference is they listen to their corner.
i know the show is over in reality and now being shown on tv but i wouldn’t be surprised if matt hughes wasn’t even on the show any more, or would i blame him.
george fagan

Lion of Jericoh Says:

I am somewhat disappointed with all of the bashing on J,

come on guys you can all do better than that.

I have seen him called a wuss, questioned for his dedication . . .generally defamed?

that is not what Matt would want you to be doing here.

I personally suggest taking a step back and looking at the positives.

Christ never pointed out all the bad things about someone now did he!
nope he gave advice on how to be a better person.

Show all of the fighters who fought on both sides some love, I am sure Matt does and would like all of us to also.

Big Oak Says:

Matt,
Just wondering what was the “witch Doctor,” thing about?
Surly he is not a real Witch Doctor?

[He's not a real witchdoctor, it's just a nickname given to him by Dana White, he's actually Matt's chiropractor. -NateR]

cleans Says:

Hey Matt I hope you read this. I have been following you for a while now and you are my favourite fighter in the UFC. You’re a strong guy and I like to watch you dominate your opponents. Watching your older fights you seemed to be much more agressive and you need to be that person again in order to beat St. Pierre. I think you can do it but you need to train harder than ever before. I think this is going to be the hardest fighter you have ever faced but you need to train as hard as you can in order to win. Get your strengths back up there by lifting weights again and training JJ and Wrestling. He’s definately planning to our wrestle you so PLEASE beat him. Watch the fights where St Pierre lost and watch what those fighters did in order to beat him. You must ground and pound. St Pierre is going to be much tougher than Serra would have ever been and I think you know that as well. PLEASE FIGHT LIKE YOU USE TO. EXAMPLE AGAINST GRACIE, CARLOS NEWTON AND EVEN PENN THE LAST TIME AROUND. good luck Hughes I’ll be waiting for you to dominate but remember St Pierre is training harder than ever before because he thinks he can win.
