Martial Arts Expo 08

   July 22nd, 2008

I had a couple more things for the blog this week, but I wanted yesterday to be all about Hanna. The first is a flyer for the upcoming Martial Arts Expo:
Martial Arts Expo 08

The second item is an email I received that I really liked:

Birth Certificate shows that we were born

A Death Certificate shows that we died

Pictures show that we lived!

Have a seat . . . Relax . . . And read this slowly.

I Believe…That just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. And just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do love each other.

I Believe…That we don’t have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

I Believe…That no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

I Believe…That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I Believe… That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I Believe…That you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I Believe… That you can keep going long after you think you can’t.

I Believe…That we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

I Believe…That either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I Believe…That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I Believe…That money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I Believe…That my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.

I Believe…That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you’re down, will be the ones to help you get back up.

I Believe…That sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel.

I Believe…That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you’ve had and what you’ve learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you’ve celebrated.

I Believe…That it isn’t always enough, to be forgiven by others. Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I Believe…That no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief.

I Believe…That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I Believe…That you shouldn’t be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life Forever.

I Believe…Two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I Believe…That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don’t even know you.

I Believe…That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you - you will find the strength to help.

I Believe…That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

‘The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything.’

Invincible Gun Safe

   July 17th, 2008

Went to the doctor yesterday, he performed quite a few tests on my knee. With the results of the tests on my knee and from what I have told him, he definitely thinks the MCL and the PCL is rebuilding itself. The next time I go back up there, in a month to a month and a half, I will get an MRI and that way he can get a picture of the knee and he can see better what’s going on. So right now, I’m going to work out lightly, try and build up my quadricep as much as I can. Do nothing with the hamstring really, from what he said and he says possibly being able to fight in 6-7 months.

Got a new gun safe, I think it’s great, it comes from Invincible Gun Safes. The one thing I like about this safe is it is all made in America. So check it out and see what you think.

Hog Hunt and MAIA SuperShow

   July 14th, 2008

Went on a hunting trip with LaserLyte. I had a great time with Aaron and his dad, Larry. A few things I didn’t tell you about: one was the size of Mark’s hog was pretty small, I think I even saw some milk from its mom still on its whiskers. So I learned that if Mark wants to shoot he will shoot. Another thing I learned is that lasers drastically improve your shooting ability. Aaron shot about 30 times each day and hit nothing. So I learned that they will drastically help you, but they won’t make you hit your target.

Had a great time on vacation last week down at Ft. Walton Beach with the family. Then from there I flew straight to Orlando for the MAIA SuperShow. Got to see some of my buddies that I don’t get to see very often. Got to see Clint from Nutritox, also got to play around with Dan and Mike from Century and then, after my obligations were done, I got to go out to eat with the guys from Dollamur. Friday night, Brian and I went to a nice steakhouse with Gary, Scotty, and Mike Swain. Mike told us how he won the Olympic bronze medal in Judo and, yes, Judo is an Olympic sport. So I had a great time there.

This a picture from my last night at the hog hunt. I went out around 11:30 and got back around 4:30 AM, so I’ve got my night goggles on and that is an infrared light in my left hand:

So I hope all goes well, I get my check-up on Wednesday, so I’ll report back in after that.

Finally, I found this the other day and thought it was pretty interesting:

Irish Luck
His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog.
There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death.
The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman’s sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved.
‘I want to repay you,’ said the nobleman. ‘You saved my son’s life.’
‘No, I can’t accept payment for what I did,’ the Scottish farmer replied waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer’s own son came to the door of the family hovel.
‘Is that your son?’ the nobleman asked.
‘Yes,’ the farmer replied proudly.
‘I’ll make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own son will enjoy. If the lad is anything like his father, he’ll no doubt grow to be a man we both will be proud of.’ And that he did.
Farmer Fleming’s son attended the very best schools and in time, graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin.
Years afterward, the same nobleman’s son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia.
What saved his life this time? Penicillin.
The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill. His son’s name?
Sir Winston Churchill.
Someone once said: What goes around comes around.
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching…
Sing like nobody’s listening…
Live like it’s Heaven on Earth.

AN IRISH FRIENDSHIP WISH:
May there always be work for your hands to do;
May your purse always hold a coin or two;
May the sun always shine on your windowpane;
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain;
May the hand of a friend always be near you;
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

Patrick Flanigan Video

   July 7th, 2008

Here’s some of the footage from Pat’s visit. He came down with his buddy Mike to train and to teach us a little bit about trick shooting about a week and a half ago. You can also check out his website: www.patrickflanigan.com

Last week, Mark and I went down to Texas with LaserLyte to go hog hunting. Hornady also supplied the ammunition for our Glock 10mm pistols. We had a great time with them, shot a couple of hogs and that was televised so there will be a video of that down the road.

Somebody on the forums asked for my take on the Rampage/Griffin fight on Saturday. To be honest, I didn’t watch the fight. Nothing really interested me that much from the reality show this time, so I didn’t watch the UFC this weekend.

As for now, I’m on vacation down in Florida, having a good time with the family. We just got done fishing out on the Gulf. Joey caught a shark, several king mackerel and some red snappers as well. So, hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th and I’ll touch back next week. -matt

Truck Unveiling

   June 29th, 2008

First I want to say that we’re having some technical difficulties with the site. So if you are having trouble or things are just acting weird, then please just be patient while we try to get everything ironed out.

I got my truck this weekend that 2 Brothers built. Absolutely amazing! The truck looks great, it’s nice and somewhat low-key and that’s how I wanted it. I didn’t want a loud paint job and so I’m super happy with the way it came out. They’ve got a little bit of work to do on it and I’ll get it in a couple of weeks. There are some pictures from the unveiling this weekend below.

My buddy Marcus Luttrell threw out the first pitch on Saturday nights’ Padres game. That was the three year anniversary of Operation Redwing and the remembrance of Seal Team 10. Marcus wrote a book of this called Lone Survivor and it was on the New York Times Bestseller list for months. So prayers could go out to the families of all the boys who died in that, as well as Marcus who went through it all.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July. My knee feels great, I’ve got a nice brace on it now and when I get my second opinion, I”ll fill everybody in.

One more thing, got a new friend, Patrick Flanigan and there is more news to come about him next week. Just to let you know, Patrick lost three bets against me and only won one. -matt

Knee Injury

   June 22nd, 2008

I found out my results, I’ve got a totally torn MCL that is still attached to my femur. I’ve got a partially torn PCL. They really think that the PCL will repair itself and that MCL has a chance of repairing itself. So we’re going to hold off on surgery right now. I am going to get a second opinion this week, so that might change; but for now we’re going to hold off on surgery.

Got more news to come this week, so there will be another blog entry the middle of the week. -matt

Happy Fathers’ Day and the Hillsboro Golden Grill Challenge

   June 16th, 2008

Well, first off, happy Fathers’ Days to all the dads out there.

I’m getting an MRI on my knee this afternoon. I’m not sure if I’ll get the results today or not, but I’ll keep you all updated.

On Saturday, we had the annual Golden Grille Challenge here in Hillsboro. Mark and I entered as team ‘2 Brothers.’ I made pulled pork and Mark made ribs. Had a great time and ended up winning the Peoples’ Choice award. Jeff and Cary Eisentraut (the owners of the local Orpheum Theater) got Judges’ Choice and Carl and Donna Reynolds won the Showmanship Award. Here are some photos from that:
